simonpelly
Hi Folks, Led to believe that the ignition keys have specific codes which may be used to cut spare copies. Does anyone know if they key code is stamped/labelled on the lock barrel once it has been removed? Simon...
landroversforever
I don't remember seeing one on mine when I took it off.
oneandtwo
It is provided in two places - on a stamped alloy disc on one set of keys when new, and also handwritten on a paper label tied to the ignition barrel behind the dash - you have to remove the dash instrument panel to get to it. You may be lucky, but I scrapped a 1998 300tdi only yesterday and the label had deteriorated so that I couldn't read the last digit - shame because I wanted the barrel for one of my other defenders. simonpelly
Thanks. At some point will have to take some of the dash off for other reasons. Will spend a bit more effort then to see if the label remains on attached/readable on the barrel.
Guest
You shouldn't need to use the code just to get a spare key cut as the alarm bits are in the fob not the key, therefore if you have a key you can get it copied. LR do have a list of key codes against VIN, but it's like pushing water up a hill trying to get it out of them. I would plump for a new barrel and keys from ebay rather than waste my time with LR. oneandtwo
Yes you can get your key copied anywhere, but when like the OP it is a 20 year old 300tdi the key is likely to be already pretty worn, so you will just be getting a copy of a worn key. If the paper label is legible, you can get a brand new fresh key cut to the code, which personally I'd prefer over a cheap eBay pattern replacement ignition barrel
