61jason61 Posted November 29, 2015 Share Posted November 29, 2015 last flipping one sheered in head, one had to sheer off and had to be last one. should i heat engine up to expand it, tap or die it to thread the hole and get a bolt in there, let it cool around bolt and try to extract or thread it in cold, glue a bolt in there and warm engine to expand and try to extract. ideas? Boydie Posted November 29, 2015 Share Posted November 29, 2015 I would be looking at a combination of heat (localised blow-torch), WD40 and a bolt extractor. If this fails I think you would be best off taking the head off and taking it to a engine reconditioning shop where they have the required tooling to extract it. Paul Woodward Posted November 29, 2015 Share Posted November 29, 2015 That's a nightmare! I wouldn't try to drill it and re tap the thread unless your experienced in such things. It's easy to make a mess of it. You can try an easiout/stud extractor but in my experience if it's tight enough to snap off then an extractor wont shift it. You could build up the broken end with blobs of weld until there's a lump on the end then weld a nut onto it. The heat from welding helps to release the plug. Last resort is take the head off and get an engineering shop to extract it. Sometimes they will come out and do it in situ. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If there is no danger of any part of it dropping in or blowing out, then I'd forget it unless you live in a very cold climate. A TD4 should start perfectly well without any plugs working in the UK, with the other 3 working you won't have any problem in starting it.Remember a TD5 only has 4 glow plugs to start with... 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Agreed, I did exactly this with 2 plugs on my 200tdi a few years ago. One blew out a few months later, the other is still stuck in there. If this fails I think you would be best off taking the head off and taking it to a engine reconditioning shop where they have the required tooling to extract it. removing head is an absolute last resort! we use our head specilist who comes out to us and drills and retaps them out for a small fee compared to removing head (same goes with renault injecters!) my advice is to phone round some diesel specilists to see whats there advice. some may require you to leave vehicle with them, some come to you.
