Betsy
I just bought a Mayflower Automotive Products (MAP) winch. It came with all the bits including the pto, the selector linkage and the drive shaft and bearing support. It all seems in order except for the drive shaft which has a stiff u/j. I have a propshaft specialist nearby who could possibly overhaul that bit. It would seem that the operating lever just sticks through the seat box? is this correct, and is there a fitting or plate to fit to the seatbox to hold the operating shaft? Where does the driveshaft support fix to? The seller supplied a home made bracket which he said bolted to the sump to negate the need to drill the chassis to mount the support. I am not sure which would be best. Whats the line pull rating on the winch? it needs a new cable and I have the chance of a free 9000lb cable, but could the winch be rated over this? What happened to Mayflower, when did they disappear? I'm trying to work out the age of the winch.
FridgeFreezer
I have one almost identical to that that says "Fairey 5000" on it (fairlead is slightly different) and one a bit later that is a Fairey 525 for a Defender.
ltwt1981
PG Winches will help you with any bits or advice. I have two similar in my lightweight, made my own shafts etc, not difficult just time consuming.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Mayflower were Superwinch in earlier years, the unit is a pre series 5000, The bracket you ask about will be probably homemade as you find that there are a number of variants in terms of fitting, sump is ok the original did mount some on sumps via 2x bolts. The PTO may be one of several types, often there is a hole for a "Fuseable pin" to go into, still avaialble from Superwinch in different ratings, often replaced with a bolt The drive lever bolts into the seatbox, then the rod goes through into the cab, the really early ones stayed under the seatbox, and you opened the lids to engage the lveler Will pull all day and are a great bit of kit Nige
Betsy
Great information!. Has anyone got any photos of the installation, especially the PTO operating lever and its fittings in the seat box? I'll post a pic of the bits I have later.
Jon White
Not quite true - Mayflower becmae Fairey, became superwinch. Its all easy enough to fit, but there were a number of very slightly different models available and some will fit better than others! In the first instance check that the PTo will actually ft to your gearbox, as one I had had to be rotated and re-drilled as it was impossible to fit otherwise! Gawd only knows what it was supposed to fit! Fit the PTo first, then fit the winch/bumper unit and then finally fill the gap in the middle with the rods! If you've got the correct u/j's you can repalce the centres easily in the same was as you do prop shaft ones! IIRC they're HS120 last ones I bought were in the region of £30 each. Available from any decent bearing supplied (BRT, BSL etc). I used to have one of these on my series - awesomely powerful winch but I found it painfully slow!!! These are a true 8000lb winch, in that they'll pull at 8000 lbs all day long. There is no comparison between these and the 8000 lb electric ones. They dont slow down under load etc. You'll need 11mm steel wire for this or equivalent plasma. 8 or 9mm is simply not strong enough! Cheers Jon
Betsy
Thx John. I'm sure it will fit, as it came straight off another series vehicle. The winch has got 11mm cable, but its pretty tired so I shall be renewing it. When you say painfully slow, I presume that was in first gear? can you speed things up (with less pulling power obviously) by using 2nd or even 3rd and 4th gear? These may be daft questions, but I have never used or even seen a PTO winch in action. I will definitly be getting a bit of training on its use. Hybrid_From_Hell
You'll find this very useful. Its very very close to what you have and how to fit etc, this is mainly a S525 version, but fitting to a Series Superwinch_Data_inc_525_fitting_manual.pdf Nige

You can speed it up a tad, but the U/j's tend to knock and remind you that you're overspeeding it! Its fine for actual winching under load, but what i found really frustrating was spooling the cable back in when I'd finished winching. Even in 4th gear I found it slow!
