  1. yeah that does sound about spot on.. they started producing dualmass flywheels to cut down the vibrations. well cheers for all the advice chaps. i will let you know the verdict tomorrow evening.. cheers sam
  2. ahh that might be 2 slots.. well im changing my clutch tomorrow so i will have a propper look if thers 2 slots.. see i assumed that thers just one slot on the fly wheel.. i will take not of the TDC mark on the damper.. cheers chaps.. i will be able to sleep togight now lol. instead of worrying like hell. do you recon that ther emight be 2 slots on a 300tdi engines then? cheers sam
  3. hello all. i have just check my timing.. 11 months ago the belt got changed and is due to be changed again. anyway i locked the fly wheel.. and then took the inspection plate off the fuel pump. then try to stick the pinn in.. when you lock the fuel pump it should be locked at 11oclock possision. well while trying to stick the pinn in was wonder where the hell is the pinn hole for the timing.. after more inspection.. it is sitting at around 7-8 oclock possision!! im quite concerned at this? but if the fuel pump is that out. how on earth is it still running!!! just to add though. my mum 90 threw a belt of the pullys and the fuel pump was also sitting at the 7-8 possision and still ran but wasnt running right.. mine how ever is running like normal.. no starting issues and loss of power... i can only think that it the belt has jump quite abit. any ideas people? ta sam
  4. it looks like some one has took the fuel pump out with out takeing the chest off? i know your sposed to use a tool to lock the pully when the belt is under tension so you can remove the fuel pump i but put the modifide kit with the sholderd timing gear on. and its striped the belt twice now? cheers sam
  5. hello all. just before christmas i finally got all the parts i need for getting my mothers 300tdi 90 going got it going. lovely job.. running sweet as its ever run.. 3000miles on, north kettering with a 14ft ifor, the timing jumps out.. so i got a new belt and striped it down and look.. toook the crank timing gear off and filled it with bearing retainer as i thought the crank snout was worn and the timing step fowards.. new belt later timed up and checked that the tensioner and idler are sitting level.. yup they were.. it was then running better then ever again, BUT 10 miles later. it makes and noise just tottering at 30.. so brother switch of in lighting speed. while waiting for dad to tow us back.. i had a look under the rocker cover.. all 8 push rods where bent. i have just striped it down.. belt number 2 has moved fowards and shredded itself on the chest.. the crank gear hasn't moved.. the idlers are sttiing right.. so i though i'll have a look at the fuel pump pully so i removed that.. and then the problem i think has slapped me in face.. the pulley is bent!! correct me if im wrong but that will throw belt allover the shop, i have put it on a flat surface and it wobbles.. so it defintly bent! i know for a fact that i havnt forced it, was all ready off then i reassmebled it the first time. anyother idea anyone? take a look at the photo cheers sam
  6. i had no proplems what so ever with 235/85 on 1:4 box. soon as i fitted that 1:2 box. is when i had all the bearing troubles and uj. the uj problem was nothing to do with the ujs.. as i never changed them, i just fintted new props. i grease them on every service 3000miles when the truck gets it general service!!
  7. im with disco-ron on that. loads of times when i have done work on my 90, just pulled the solenoid wire out and then wonderd why it wouldnt start lol.. cheers sam
  8. right.. lets get this right!. up till this week i haddent been on here for over 6 months lol. the auto box idea went out the window i was working last summer and wasnt earning enough... it not worth it lol... and i now have 205/80/16 on my defender as i wore the 235/85/16s to basicly slicks. i thinkg the gearing i have now is perfect.. but sitting at 60 when the engines 3500rpm for 4 hours nearly to gloustershire. when it used to sit at 65mph with the old grabbers at 3000rpm. .. i wil probably not bother with it.. as for 1, 1:006 box is like rocking horse pooh. 2, it will struggle like hell with a trailer even empty. 3, back roads it will be usless on hill and single track lanes. 4, the gearing was so high with my old 235/85/16s it was blowing wheels bearing and u.js left right and centre and 5, the tyres i have now are spot-on.. cheers sam
  9. i have scraped the auto converion. i wanted to do it last summer. but it just not worth for that truck.. if i had a m-reg or somthing then i would do it.. i used to have 235/85/16 gerneral grabber a/t2, but i now have 205/80/16 mitcherlins.. the ones that come on defenders standard.
  10. hello. i have been having a think. has anyone had any expearence with a 1:006 transfer box on a defender..? it probably a silly idea of mine.. but my transfer box is buggering it self again.. so im keeping a eye for some higher geared.. cheers sam
  11. Hi everyone, hope every one had good christmas, day before christmas eve i had all the parts and got my mum 300tdi defender 90 going, started up for the first time in over a year and was lacking it timing and chest, vac pump and looked a fair mess, got it started, running sweet as a nut.. had an mot on christmas eve and it flew thought, then went christmas shopping. and it started smoking more and more. now in tick over it blue smoke, but clears up abit when the turbo cuts in. i have triple checked the timing, put new leak off pipes on, didnt sort it out. the only thing i can think off now is the head gaskit has split between the push rod and cylinder, the same thing happend with my 200tdi 90.. any one have a second opinion on this? before i go guns blasing with a new head gaskit and skimming the head!! lol cheers sam
  12. eerrr. i think the proper term is "valve stem caps".. i just call them top hats. there for the valves top for on the rocker shaft
  13. Hello. I am after the part numbers for the banjo bolts of a bosch ve fuel pump on a 300tdi. The ones i need are the 17mm or 19mm (not sure what one) at the back of the pump and the 12mm for the turbo pipe for the top houseing of the fuel pump? and allso need some top hats if anyone can find the part numbers. as i can find anything myself! Chers Sam
  14. Afternoon. I have noticed the other day that my turbo is sounding differnt to it used to, At 2500rpm it sounds normal, but at 3000rpm above its skreaming instead on whistleing. Reason I ask it that I got a leaflet at the LRO show about turbos.. I dont know if you of you got one, it was in the freebee bags. And it said for noisy turbo, air pipes split or poped of, broken gaskit or knackerd turbocharger? I would like a secand oppinion in this please? Its done 230000 miles.. well the engine and its the original turbo!.. Cheers Sam
  15. Evening chaps.. im due new tyres in couple thousand miles time.. at the moment a have General Grabber AT2.. Fantastic tyre.. but i really am looking for somthing like a mud terrain now.. where i keep my cattle, it get extreamly wet and bloody slippy in the winter. these grabbers can just about pull a 14ft ifor willaims loaded it 1tonn of straw. but then makes a respectible amount of mess. i doo like the look of the Cooper STT Mud terrain? anyone had any expearence with them? and im having anylick finding 235/85/16 size? BFGoodrich are out the question unless its the old pattern. and allso Kumho KL71s.. some poeple have said they are good tyres but i see and how i knoe kumho as remulds? i might be wrong nowdays. so if anyone has had some expearence and how they rate them.. tyres arnt really somthing to trial and error with really are they lol.. cheers sam
