On the exhausts ( still need to measure up ) I have been considering routing the exhaust through my tree sliders and have the exhaust exit point at the back..

I think I could run some stainless down the centre of the tree sliders and then join from the exhaust manifolds to the pipe fixed in the slider with a stainless braided connector plan to use both tree sliders for this

Will hopefully measure up this afternoon to see if it is viable. I already have some stainless pipe and plate to make exhaust flanges, would only need to buy the braided sections.

    Regards Stephen

That is asking a lot of the flexi sections to have rigid pipes so far away from the centre line of the engine?

Will you have a balance connection between banks?

All of that sounds like standard Britpart - I had that with a few of their components.

That is all there is now for many parts. If genuine is available then that is what I recommend .

The Heater to BH seal was BP and supplied by the client. The genuine item is entirely different and an easy fit....

I fitted a full set of genuine shocks last year (to a coiler) and the vehicle was back in a month with rattles at the back, both bottom shock upper bushes were missing and the lower bushes were splitting too.....

A few of us in this area are discussing series door seals and vent seals with a local specialist rubber extruder, if anything comes of it I'll post it on the forum.

  3. @hurbie, 7 years ago I stupidly ordered a full set of road springs for a 109 S3 from Bearmach.

I fitted the front springs and fully built they did not deflect at all with the wheels  on the deck.

Pulled them off and made a test rig and loaded a single spring with known mass ( several sheets of 2m x 1m 10mm thick steel ) and to get to standard ride height from pad to bump stop it took 800kg .....that is near to the total front axle to road max mass.

I sent a detailed email report including pictures to BM and was never acknowledged, and just to drop a cherry on top it took 7 months to get refunded.

Replaced with springs from Jones. Bolt up and go . Perfectly engineered by real Engineers.

  4. Yep

The fuel tanks really hammered that home.

In a previous life I was an Engineer in a major mass/batch production factory so have a deep understanding of QC and consistent quality tooling and manufacture.

Even more frustrating is suppliers/anufacturers completely ignoring any feedback that questions the product.

  5. After market pattern parts that don't fit and/or fail..............

This could run for years

    latest ones ...

Supplied defender heater box to BH seal , pattern , had to cut about 12mm off it's width to get it to fit.

Another recent one, Defender Lucas steering lock small ignition switch module , the outer mazak casting diameter was too big for the lock housing . Sorted with some patient flap wheel fitting...

And another , SS Defender door hinge bolt kit , the countersunk screw heads are too big for the counterbore in the hinge..... more fitting with a flap wheel.

Series Military under seat fill new pattern tanks that the neck is too small for the filler tube and the caps don't seal or lock to a stop , fixed by welding in the old tank top into the new ones , I mean truly WTF are these manufacturers and suppliers on ???

Series door seals that just don't fit - too deep/wide/thick/rigid

Series vent flap seals - the same

Pattern side/brake/indicator light units for 300 Tdi Defender onwards don't fit the Factory bulb holder

    .........and breathe

The list is endless when you get into it

Series rad coolant hoses that are the same diameter outside as the stub they are going onto.....

  6. I can imagine it has.

Everyone including the horses were clearly being looked after. With heavy towing I always link the anchor chain to something other than the tow ball if at all possible.

This thread will stay in my mind forever, so glad the outcome was uneventful.

    never seen one of those

I've always called the drawbar plate for an S1 a farmers plate - it fits across the bottom of the lower section of the rear x-member with a series of holes across it to line up the implement with the pto.

Whilst we are on this topic has anyone got any experience of using a flail mower around the 6ft size for cutting paddocks? I have only ever used a topper which does the job but leaves the grass in a line if it is left too long between cuts

I am thinking a flail with a rear roller will mulch it and spread it giving a better finish?

I have an 8ft rough pasture mower .... the Mog has 540/1000 pto too...

That's concerning. Seems like a design flaw in the bracket, then?

If the casing cracks the stresses become dynamic and from what I remember of Stress Analysis lectures back in 1981 that changes things a whole lot from the static stress bending moment in an intact case. That bolt on is a visual security aid only. Should never have reached the roads.

Wallpapering over the cracks comes to mind.

What actually happened is LR changed the supplier for the axle casing, or there was a change in methods (no one is sure which), but for whatever reason it was changed from friction welded flanges to MIG welded flanges. It was the early batches of these which were found to be failing. There has been a recall for it for years, but they have recently expanded the range of vehicles to which it applies - hence more owners now getting letters. If the weld has failed you get a new axle case, if not you get the brackets.

The issue was fixed on later vehicles, but I would still swap any MIG welded casing out for an older friction welded one if I owned such a vehicle.

Ah , that makes more sense re method change, I hadn't realised that.

Can I be surely not the first to request that @steve b do a build thread or something on such a unique truck!

On the oil filter - the slimmest possible way on earlier front covers is the replacement pump housing:

    https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/rover-v8-oil-pump-cover-m-v8-cover

Which removes a big chunk, however it will foul the cross-bolts on a 4.0 or 4.6 (ask me how I know). There's Mocal and Flotec variants, I think I had the Flotec, the Mocal *might* work but I'd be very careful - this thread seems to suggest it can be bolted on but only just:

    https://www.v8forum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=75708#p75708

 you've asked before , I need to do a deep search of the house and find the build photo's which are all pre-digital and somewhere in my large collection of roll film prints , then copy with the DLSR and then I'll have something to show of the build .

As @Stellaghost can confirm it's looking a bit untouched at the moment waiting for me to have time to sort out gearbox and transfer box plus a few other things....

It may have been a mistake to buy a temporary car when it failed....

    Yup.

Not a chance, you would have to trailer it to private land!

Check out this "Wildfing"   Home made portals!

Built by Bill VanSnorkel , an outstanding bush Engineer who has posted on here several times , it has a super low crawler gear with the portals built from bits of Series transfer boxes with fabbed casings .

...This balanced articulation is something many strive for and some achieve

    An amazing build.

  13. It could be an intermittent fault with the air flow meter - it does show symptoms just like that.

Unplug it and try it , less top end but good pull away and if it's consistent then it's unlikely to be turbo related.

S2 is a gonner, chassis/bulkhead totally rotten every panel bent. Maybe sell engine/'box to someone.

Roofless one, again chassis/bulkhead rotten. Sold roof. every panel stoved in (cows I think...)

Blue one is ok ish, but Holden 6 engine. Popular over here back in the day. Now everyone wants originality.

Looks like it's had a bucket of body filler at some point... It is going to be my tub donor! (and sell roof)

I've pre sold two gearboxes, just need to remove them and get on a pallet.

Had a hip replacement two weeks ago, so apparently can't "overdo it"

Physio Nazis monitor my steps via witchcraft, limited to 2000 per day....I did 7000 one day and 4500 yesterday so I'm in trouble for my Monday Zoom consult....

I'll dig out some pic's of my series 109 on coils with a wide body and share with you , this is an interesting build.
