  1. I've just put 150ft of 11mm plasma from Rufftracks on my front 8274 that has an extended and thinner drum no problems, and I like it.

but when I used 12mm Dyneema after washing it, it seemed to go thicker and fluffier (don't take the pee) and then wouldn't fit though the drum but would settle down after a pull or two,

don't ask me why but somehow I would trust the Plasma more, even though I've still got Dyneema on my rear winch.

Horses for courses, but the fluffies nice on yer handies.

  2. I'm worried you're going to turn Turtle sgain in front of me, my ribs still hurt from last time.

Well the excuse could be "it's only 5 miles from home and we've not had chance to wake up yet"

    or

"I kept hearing this twanging noise and thought Robin Hood was shooting at me with arrows", but it turned out to be Saleys cam belt breaking again! :hysterical::hysterical:

But seriously lads it will be a good day out for some serious fun and competiton in the beautiful Cheshire countryside and help out a well deserving Land rover club.

Hopefully the trophys not to big for mantlepiece this time, she goes mad and told me not to win to many this year especially as there's a pair of them, AND THATS YER EXCUSE :P

    Boothy out :P

  3. Just on with the after event repairs,

    One gearbox mount,

One heavy duty unbendable, bent steering track rod,

One winch alternator, but managed using engine one with some clever electrickery diversions,

One sticking brand new genuine starter motor, and auto's don't bump up even down those long hills at Walters arena,

Sump gasket, which is a pleasure because I thought it was rear crank seal dripping down bellhousing,

Another severn gallons of Shell optima, these V8's are quite thrifty really,

This speed section stuff sounds expensive, but good fun.

    Nearly done

  4. Adrian

I cannot find the bloody things in broad daylight with a map, and when I do find them thats when the problems start!!!!

I have spent the last thirty years wandering around railway lines up and down the country on nights and still manage to get lost even with 2 great e'ffin long rails to follow, so please don't expect me to find a glow stick in a forrest at midnight especially the size of Severn sisters, and I'm scared off the dark, but just between me and you please.

Light the Hogroast and it's a whole new ballgame.

Hope you had a great holiday my friend, and see you at the weekend.

  5. Neil,

Is the Sunday night mini challenge a go or not before I try and fix all my roof spot lights?

Just on the off chance the truck survives scrutineering, followed by all day Saturday, a double driven day of trialling on Sunday, with little Boothy my pedal happy lad in it (who's now used to his 1100cc Saxo) and needs some excitement. which he won't get in a oil burner (the only thing fast's the belt comin off again) :hysterical:

    See you Friday

  6. Just put a set of five Stuans onto Mach 5 rims, brand new tubes and using 11.5x35x16's Simex's,

I feel like i've wrestled an eight foot Aligator full of whizz, with an attitude who thinks I skinned his dad, I'm knackered.

I did not use tyre soap for obvious reasons, but I did use Imperial leather talc, so they smell beautifull.

Used tyre levers and a fitting machine and loads of blocks of wood to hold the tyre up slightly whilst tring to skin the backs of my hands putting the Staun in the tyre.

There must be a simpler way of doing these devils, Alan Kemp was heard to say earlier chuck em and get some bolt on beadlocks, rich from the bloke who sold them to me.

    Whats your experience's?

  7. Now then,

I did the business and used another pair of my square section seals and put the diff in the vice and used a long piece of spare air pipe to enable me to use my ARB compressor and switches that are on the truck.

This enabled me to put the bango on nice and square and see where the air is leaking, answer nowhere its cured.

    I hope.

When I turn the diff by hand there's air moving and a slight hissing around the bango area but the comp does not run up, and the locker can be heard moving in and out.

Sat it for 10 minutes or so engaged and the comp still didn't run up, it does run after 2 or 3 operations which is the same as before.

So hopefully it will work when its back on the floor with the wheels turning for a few miles, we'll see towards the end of the month.

Will keep you posted if anybodys interested.

  8. I've not managed to get Viton but have managed slightly bigger black seals which I will try, apparantly Viton will stand a higher heat 150"C as oppose to 120"C for to'thers, what I don't know is about wear properties etc, we will find out no doubt.

I have spoken to Tim at Devon 4x4 who tells me that the round seals for the spring clip type end has now been replaced by the squarer section ones, which should be a like for like replacement, but be carefull when fitting them not to roll them, oop's I hope I did roll them that will solve my problems but I feel sure I didn't.

What I have done is lost all faith in the realabilty of ARB lockers to keep air and will always now have doubts of will it last the day, it's another doubt I'm sure but it's adding to a long list of things I thought were improvements to standard items.

So now my tea's gone down its of to the inventing shed to find out

  9. Mine are about 2 years old and have not been a problem, they're 24 spline with the wire retaining clip,

but following an ingress of silt due to failed wheel bearing, I stripped the diff cleaned the axle tubes/pan etc and renewed diff bearings because the pinion bearing was knackered.

Upon rebuild the rebuilt one (rear) did about 20 minutes before it failed on the Howlin Wolf round 2 (excuse 106) and I bought 3 new pairs of Devon 4x4, I've put a new set in and no way will it seal.

Upon inspection the old seal is round and the new ones are more of a square profile they feel like they will work when putting them on but they blow straight past, and I did oil the surface with EP90 and we've cleaned the surface in a lathe with emery to remove any harshness.

Not had chance to speak to Devon yet as this was Sunday afternoons job.

Anyone had similar or different seals from elsewhere?

  10. Mine's exactly the same, then when it does go from hi to low or visa versa it then jumps out just as your moving off, so then you try to ram it back in with an amateurish sounding almighty grinding of gears, which does attract some "whats he doin now?" looks.

I think it's abuse of linkages and mucho oil required in the hard to reach parts.

    Tally Ho

  11. Batteries have changed significantly in the metals and amounts of metals used in recent years (due to the lack of lead and dislike of use by anti-lead brigade) which has a detrimental effect on normal batteries, also when a battery fails nowadays it's an instant event and not a series of near misses and slow starts on cold mornings, more like a light bulb going kaput.

I use massive submarine type maintainable batteries for high output current usage (big loads at remote locations) at work and its becoming more difficuly to source and use a good quality battery that will be reliable and maintainable.

I think gel batteries are the way forward but pricey.

And please be carefull when testing batteries on Amps for your sake and the meters sake, make sure they're well vented, we had a lad blow his beard of one day when testing on amps by mistake, they exploded because of gas buildup. Smelt bloody horrible.

  12. Boothy, prehaps we should put you on the sledge!!

Snow White you little Minx, be carefull or you might get "porked again" in your tent and you wish you were playin with them Dwarfs again, they're more your size love :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: .

"Sod the sledge, Boothy would be a good test for any winch, lie him down with the bow of a effing great tree above him a try to stand him up by winch,(no double pulls allowed). As long as his right arm can reach the hog roast and his left can reach a pale of ale, all should be well. :P "

Alan will your blue bandaged heap last that long? or is another one punch wonder day?

Neil your winch off is turning into a BITCH off, before they even get there.

  13. Got my steering pump sorted now with a ZF74 and I have been wondering (as you do in moments of bordom or mention of shopping trips) and have been toying with a DIY hydro assist using the steering box as a supply for a ram,

Question is who's been there seen it and done it, and is willing to share before i spend loads of time and money in the wrong direction, I still don't fancy the full hydro steer because I do a few miles on the road to my mates car wash (saves me hours of cleaning drains and drives) and his washers are much better than mine.

Any ideas are more than welcome please boys :)

  14. I've just given up and bought a new ZF74 of Alfred Murray (this number does not exist with ZF and is a dreamt up number I presume) anyway it is identical to another ZF unit I've just replaced which came of a big Poxhaul Omega, the only physical difference I could find without a major stripdown is the output boss hole, which was 2.5mm Vauxhall and just over 4mm "ZF74", easy drill out the cheap scrap yard one.

Is what is meant by drilling the PAS pump out?, if it is its very easy just remove the boss 27mm socket, drill clean and replace, sounds to easy that one!

Anyway from what I can gather 3 and 5 series BMW's especially diesel versions use high output ZF pumps, is this where the elusive "ZF74" comes from?

I've not noticed a massive difference between second hand used Omega, and brand new ZF74 on a standard steering box, but in all fairness its not moved out of the garage and settled yet.

"ZF74" is supposed to be 12.5 litres per min at 120 bar, revs ? Clockwise rotation from the front,

find out what Omega and BMW are and you have your answer!

    Challenge for the weekend :i-m_so_happy::i-m_so_happy:

  15. By eck, that site woke us up!

1st Punch, rope snapped rolled backwards, hit tree

2nd Punch, nose dived and stood it vertical on front end with only one wheel touching down

3rd Punch, Saley nipped in in front of us, does a backward roll onto his roof and lay there like an upturned tortoise, only noiser and without doubt funnier

Great event, thanks to the AWDC team and to Marshalls etc, well done again. :D

  16. Just loading the motor onto the trailer for tommorows Howlin Wolf round 2 when low and behold its running roughish, after plugging the laptop in its the O2 sensor again.

Whats happening its not seeing it all the time, bit hit and miss but see's it more after a rev for a while then it peters out again, it definitly drops to 0volts which causes chaos.

Tried rewiring and replacing sensor including running new wires right back to the plug on the ECU in case it was a dry joint or something similar.

Question is how do I switch off the O2 sensor so it will just run its basic fuel map tommorow until I get it back in the workshop for a better look?

This is hopefully an easy fix I can do in the morning when I get there, well thats the plan.

Please make any instruction simple, not being an expert or even a novice yet it takes a lot of knocking in.

The sensors are Bosch 4 wire narrow band type.

    Thanks again Guys.

  17. I used standard Escort leads from the scrappys, got a couple of sets cleaned up with gunk or similar and they're perfect, fantasticly tight fit on the plugs and definatly made for the coil pack with the rubber 'o' ring and snap fit.

Coil packs mount like H'F'Hells side by side over the water pump.

Worked all day on Howlin Wolf round 1 at Bordon, underwater and never missed a single beat all day in the swamp, absolutely amazing.

Best bit did not cost a penny and if needed I've got a spare set.

I find it very hard to justify a set of Magnecor or similar when these work perfectly well.
