  1. Gentlemen,

Money cannot buy a decent grease gun because nobody makes one any more,

I am a maintenance man who has worked on the Railway signalling department for 31 years now, and have greased more cranks, fittings and ancient signalling things than you can imagine.

Its fair to say I've examined and serviced more nipples than a retired breast surgeon, and tended to said nipples with every type of grease gun imaginable, and frankly none seem to last above six months.

Some days spent on heavy mechanical signalling mtce can result in excess of 15 tubes or so being used, before the chippy opens.

Best gun without a doubt 4 jaw side lever, cartridge or refillable, probably costing in excess of £60 or so, especially ones from suppliers that can supply new springs, seals and jaw sets at point of sale.

If not any cheap carp and be prepared to sling it regulary and get another, but always check your nipples are clear before trying to force grease past, because clogged greaseways and nipples will seriously damage your tools seals.

    It's a minefield, good luck. ;)

  2. Hattymender,

I've never primed as such, a V8 yet and I've built loads of em, with no problems,

The normal method is when seperating both halves of the pump is to pack the gears with vasolene or similar petroleum based jellys, which helps oil pump prime up quicker, and being petrol based the vasolene soons disperses into the system with no harm done.

I have a 3.5litre engine in storage with about 1500miles on it since a full rebuild, which if I have the time I may spit the pump to do the above , but if I didn't I would disconnect the positve lead of the coil to inhibit from sparking and let it turn over for a few minutes first and not overrev it for a few minutes to let the oil move around the engine after it started.

Watch your oil light or pressure gauge it should go out or show a reading of 10psi or more simply on the starter motor when its cold.

Don't panic, your approach about fitting it sounds good but do make sure you check the oil first and service it before to long.

  3. Carl, you can't call Saley that on a forum, its terrible, :

and I thought you was such a nice lad :rolleyes:

no tents for us boys, its not to far away,

and I like starting the 4.2 Nissan diesel at 05.30 in the Cul-de-Sac on a Sunday morning to warm up,

kinda make's them glad the angle grinder won't be going all day.

  4. Steve 90, what I should have added is my truckcab bulkhead and cab rear has been moved back by 8 inches because I'm 6'4" so was getting a bit cramped in a standard truckcab, so the Recaro back is no problem in reality, just comfy,

I know Adrian is at a delicate age but he still appears to move well,

I give my 10 year old German Sheperd Dog some stuff called Metacam which is remarkably good for his joints and keeps him very active and he's still chasing cats and squirrells very well, mmm I wonder?

  5. I use a pair of Recaro's out of a late V6 Ford Capri, superbly comfortable, low sided ideal for access, and built for a larger than average arse ( no, not the driver Adrian), dead strong frame and I've bolted the down directly to a piece of alloy on top of the seat box, nice and low,

and if you really want comfort they're heated as well, no Adrian I didn't dare connect them, fancy getting a shock when you hit the water, you could blow more than a fuse!!!!:blink:

  6. My brother does my MOT for £2 to cover paperwork,

it's the hardest MOT any vehicle ever has, trust me,

last year he pulled it pieces because the blue dash light did not come on when it was on main beam!!!,

and he checks the tyres don't stick out with a straight edge,

he's to the letter is my brother, but its cheap (don't know what he'd charge for a re test)

it took me ages to bring myself to brew up for him afterwards at halftime when we were watching the match.

  7. If anybody has got a spare push in type washer pump (standard cheapo type with 2 push on blade connectors) they can chuck in their toolbox it would be much apprechiated, just broken mine 21.30hrs just before it goes on the trailer for a 5 hour drive.

It's no doubt one a thousand things that can go wrong.

Thanks lads and lassies and look forward to seeing you tommorow.

  8. Just added Megasquirt to my humble V8, and it's thanks to you lads for excellent information and advice.

Found it very daunting at first but like Nige said earlier, the amount of new information that suddenly starts to make sense and relates to each other is fantastic, and I find myself looking for things on the laptop screen like an expert who by the way has only fitted it 10 days ago, and has certainly not completed fine tuning it yet.

Deepest thanks to a couple of you guys, who know who they are, for some absolutely sound advice and for answering yet more stupid questions at all times of day.

Yep definitly the best place on the net for questions, answers and solutions, and all involved should feel proud of yourselves, perhaps one day I may answer one, (God help you).

    Well done, and thanks again

  9. Just in the process of changing front hockey sticks for camber corrected one's,

all's going well, chassis built 3 years ago, all put together with Polybushes and copper slip where neccesary, when low and behold the rear bolt of the axle pair on the nearside turns and turns, now this axle was fitted less than 2 years ago, nut comes off but bolt just spins and wont pull or push through insert,

won't tap through insert, remove caliper hit it with long drive bolt, no way is this coming out,

grind both ends and spead axle receptacle's (like that word) as far apart as possible to drop stick out,

    Result 2 hours,

Drawback of Polybush- it doesn't help removal because metal insert just turns and is not gripped by nylastic type bush as used on standard (and new hockey sticks) so makes and easy job a possible pain in the tool box!

Dead easy to assemble with Polybush, what a pain to get apart.

Take warning, anybody else had simlar troubles or it it just my luck?

  10. Busy in the workshop Carl ?

Just got to rewire the full injection sysyem and get the Megasquirt running, rebuild the back suspension and paint the new doors (which have'nt arrived yet),

    rewire the lights and winches

fit the new hockey sticks and all new brakes, including changing some flat brake pipes,

drill the wheels for the beadlockers and get them zinc dipped,

talk her into letting me have new tyres instead of carpets (that's the hard one),

    See you in September

  11. Nige, I cannot imagine how that must of hurt, it hurt me reading about it, I have a fear of plug lead belts from finding out the hard way on my first car a 1969 Escort Van with a missfire, and can still remember thirty years on, and thats candle power really compared to todays coils.

Ian, seeing that makes it a clear as Gin, it was the realationship from the EDIS 8 to the ECU where I was struggling, but were on a roll now. And yes I did get your email OK, many thanks again, I'm going to have a hell of a bar bill one day when we all meet up.

Hopefully a couple of evenings of soldering and extending and trying to keep em neat, they're above me head in the back of the Kingcab on show, so I'm trying like mad to loom them as much as possible neatly.

Before anyone adds "if you roll in water your ECU will get wet", if that happens and I'm sat in it then the last thing I'm gonna be concerned about is a wet ECU, where's the nearest bar will be more important.

Thanks again lads, I'm still smilling about Nige :P

  12. Just smack bang in the middle of wiring M/S thanks to Fridge Freezer and Bull Bar Cowboy and not wanting to annoy anyone on the phone Sunday a.m. but here goes 2 simple questions

    1,

Am I right in thinking that to wire a 4 wire Lambda sensor of an Escort, that the 2 white wires are the heater that should/could be supplied via the main relay switched live and his mate to earth (making the heater live all the time the ecu is powered up),

Black wire is the sensor wire to pin 23 ECU

Grey wire (possibly with red trace) is earthed out ?

Common sense would have told me grey and black would be opposite way around, but thats where help is sought.

    2,

S'cuse me for being thick and blind but somewhere along the vast amounts of information I've tried to absord I've missed when wiring the 2 coil packs (which I've mounted directly above the water pump) and will call one "left bank" and one "right bank" do I distinguish from the EDIS8 pins 8&9 and 11&12 which is which,

and further more of said coil packs with connection plugs facing rear of engine (or bulkhead) which plug leads go to what or where?

It looks to me as there are 4 coils total, and it must be required to fire the correct coil pack and plugs to suit?

There's a dead easy answer to that one I know but I dammed if I can find it.

Thanks guys, just wait for the questions when it doesn't start.

  13. Just in the middle of a Megasquirt conversion and was hoping to use original loom as much as possible.

Now bearing in mind this is a much extended loom so things arn't as straightforward as you may think, when low and behold where's the Haynes book of words but more than the words the wiring of EFi page?

After much argueing with SWMBO for hiding things again, it has not, nor will not turn up easily.

Can some kindly person post or PM me the said diagram including colour code chart, and yes I have checked the archives but could not locate one I could read or print.

    Thanks guys

    Booto101 :rolleyes::rolleyes:
