  1. Yes I had that engine years ago and that one snapped a cam pulling of the drive in our 110. Sold it on as parts about 5 years ago. Given current developments and a lack of disco 200's I am starting to lean towards buying a td5 disco to strip. But it's academic until I've finished the job that'll pay for some of it. Mike
  2. The irony is I painted it for him, I must of known what was coming......
  3. I'll just leave this here. Thanks to TSD for playing the role of AA man. Mike
  4. I've got one your always welcome to borrow. I've only used it a couple of times but it's ex SimonR. Mike
  5. Damper has been removed and the slave is td5 from memory, there's no fluid loss in the master. It's also worth noting it's a V8 box on a diesel so it's possible the splines have let go, but It feels to me more like the arm has punched through. When I get it home I'll pull the slave but I suspect the engine is coming out and possibly the gearbox. Looks like I'll be borrowing the mother-in-law's bike For now. Mike
  6. Don't know yet, the clutch pedal went stiff ish coming off the motorway. Couldn't find any gears, managed to get it back into fifth and found a car park. A colleague has picked me up for work so I'll go and get it home tonight. Mike
  7. Well, you'll never believe this...... The clutch went on the way to work this morning. So it looks like the engines coming out sooner than planned. Mike
  8. Do not mix oat and glycol. If you swap, flush the whole system completely before changing otherwise you'll have a jelly mess that can write off the engine. I have been told you shouldn't use oat in a TDI but I did for a while at the recommendation off another mechanic (he gave me 25ltr drum of the stuff) and can't remember why not use it. Mike
  9. I'm well aware of this hence not wanting to get a 12 month'er. The jem would be a different situation anyway. Mike
  10. Thanks but I need a disco spec really and that's about £1k beyond what I can find. Mike
  11. Going forward I will get a jem running later this year as that's also tax exempt. It means if when I end up here again I at least have a back up plan. Mean while anyone got a good 200tdi in the south of England. Mike
  12. Bare in mind I'm running 200tdi discovery engine, engine mounts, gearbox and exhaust not defender spec. Though I'm using r380 gearbox mounts on an lt77. I had a feeling the oil filter housing was different but not sure if it clears the disco engine mounts. Mind the chassis side of the engine mount is bolt on but I'd still need to fab an new mount. I'm trying not to be a tale of woe, honest. I've settled on the fact I either need to find a disco 200tdi or rebuild the one I have. Just need to find some penny's and get on with it. Mike
  13. To be honest a 2.5d would require as much alteration as either a 300tdi or indeed a td5, at which point either is more appealing. I have toyed with fitting a 200 turbo, manifold and engine mounts to a 300 then either using the 200 flywheel housing or switching to an r380. I'd also need to fit a 300 radiator. Not sure how viable this is if not it's replacing engine mounts, exhaust, radiator and air intake system plus I'd need to buy and switch to and r380. All of the above is why I looked at the td5 as they are cheap and plentyful. Mike
  14. The original prototype (dart) was an Ali body on a mini floorpan. Granted I haven't driven one for about 15 years but I sat in one the year before last and still fit. Mike
  15. That's essentially the plan for one but it needs about a week of evenings and two weekends of fibreglass work before anything can be bolted to it. The other one may actually be cheaper to make a new shell. Mike
  16. Yeah about that..... Neither is a five minute job. But yes I've considered it and haven't ruled it out, in fact one may come to the house later in the year to try to relieve this issue in the future. My works give me an extra two days holiday in lue of use as it is. Mike
  17. Believe me I briefly thought about selling either the 110 or the ibex or even both, but I need a tow vehicle for work and that there caravan project. There is nothing out there I would happily daily with the exception of one of my jem's (and that makes the ibex really sensible) and the 110 is tax and mot exempt next month. Oh yeah and everything else depreciates like a stone so would end up costing more in the long run. Mike
  18. I could but that then eats into the engine budget and it means the ibex is on the drive and can't be moved anywhere else, which is alright until I need to fix the 110 or the aforementioned 12 month'er. Mike
  19. This is all well and good but if I take the head off and find it is oval then I can't get to work on Monday. Whatever I end up doing it has to be one out, one in over a weekend (maybe a long weekend if I'm lucky). Your all forgetting this is my daily driver there is no other car. Mike
  20. This photo was taken a couple of years ago during the Scotland head gasket. It's difficult to see but the honing lines are visible either side but the bore is polished front and back. So I'd say oval and I doubt it's improved with another 20k miles. Mike
  21. It smokes after sitting at tick over in traffic, fair size cloud. Most of the rest of the time it's not majorly noticeable. I know this engine has worn bores as it was plain to see last time the head was off. Ultimately this engine is tired and the other has oil pressure issues. As for budget for a replacement first it'll depend on the engine as I'll be willing to find more money for a low mileage or recently recond lump. Given that it's going to cost £1200-1500 to rebuild the other one in parts alone I guess that's the top end of the budget, but obviously I want to spend as little as possible. Mike
  22. I'm going to keep an eye out for a 200tdi as that's the quickest way to keep it on the road. If one doesn't come up between now and the end of the current commitments then I'll rebuild to other engine. I just hope it lasts that long as it's starting to be antisocial with it's smoking. Mike
  23. Land rover volt guage in the 110. Measuring on the back I have 14.5v but the guage is reading off the scale. Panicked at first as thought the alternator had gone nuts but it's definitely the guage. Mike
  24. Yeah I've had a poke around. To be honest the best option is to find a second hand 200tdi and put that in for now but they are getting tricky to find. Mike
