  1. Currently doing a leaf spring conversion on some axles and its all going pretty well.

I am using military shackles on the front so I can use the standard defender/disco caster angle on the front axle and the steering bar can clear the springs. The one thing I am not sure about is the U-bolt on the front axle next to the diff. As we have rotated the axle the extra casing at this part of the axle means the U bolt cant be rotated round to fit into the plate they normally bolt to. Is there a standard solution for this? i have looked round the common threads on this conversion but cant find anything that talks about this directly.

Can any one give me a hand or point me in the direction of the conversation I have missed? I was thinking maybe a larger U bolt from another vehicle or cutting a U bolt in half and welding it to the axle casing in the correct location but was not sure about this....

    Thanks for your help

  2. Hi Does

anyone know the thread type for the feed pipe on this vehicle? I am looking to get an adaptor but would like to confirm the thread first. I did find this post http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php/179950-Anyone-know-the-fuel-union-connector-size-for-a-series-3 but just want to confirm first.

I also want to put the same connection on the return line (was originally just a normal worm drive clip) Does anyone know if the feed and return pipes are the same size and if so does anyone know where I can buy the oiive and female fiting as per the feed pipe for it?

    thanks for your help

  3. Firstly massive thanks to my dad! He finished off the back axle a right treat :D (He does read this :P )

And then we chucked it under the car and I scratched my dads lovely paint with the U-bolts

    post-19190-0-04866400-1382902931_thumb.jpg

Then we pushed the car outside to turn it round to tackle the front axle. It was the first time its seen sunlight in quite a while!

We have also got the front axle under the car and while not quite in the correct position it is pretty obvious there is quite the propshaft/sump packaging issue..... Hadnt quite realised how much the diff pinion would move compared to the series one! Anyways think I have found a way around the problem with yet another different sump.... Now I want a sump from a Land Cruiser amazon 100 series 4.7L V8 which I found out today fits my engine as well. It doesnt extend out to the drivers side of the engine which should resolve the clash. Pictures of the different sumps here http://onsills.com/OS2012/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1772 The one I think I need is the one in the second post. I currently have a rear sump version. The only problem is finding one! Anyone know of a good place to buy used Toyota parts? I am going to get a quote from a Toyota garage just to see what they say but not holding up my hopes...

    Right gtg! Cheers

  4. While it is expensive for a defender and most people on here wouldnt buy one (like this) for posing there is a fair bit of expensive kit when u start adding it up. base car 25k min brakes what do people charge for those? 7k installed from some places? wheels and tyres another 2.5k? how much is a retrim 2k? and another say 5k for accessories so maybe a little over 40k and then more labour on top of that? Bet his profit isnt as big as you would first think...

  5. Them not moving anywhere was the idea! :P

We just made the mounts, got the axle under there with the U bolts attached, measure it left to right on a common point on the axle left and right to the leaf springs and measured the diff nose angle on my dads defender and replicated it. Tightened up the U bolts, checked everything, tacked them on and then took the axle off to weld everything on properly. Not expecting the front to be so easy with things like the steering bar being in the way and the sump in quite close proximity...

  6. Thanks Nigel :i-m_so_happy:

We managed to get the wheel nuts off in the end. Had a go with an impact driver and then borrowed a 3/4" socket set from the neighbour :)

We have also gone about lining up and fixing the leaf spring mounts to the axle and made some damper mounts as well. Hopefully my dad will weld them on and clean and paint the axle before I come home next weekend  so we can get it out the way under the car to start on the front axle! :D But i do always tell him that he doesn't have to do anything while I am not there.....

  7. Hi Jad, :rtfm:................. I said that it was "my mistake" as I bought it unseen...............

Calm down... If the description said " New, 90, Richards, Galvanised, rolling chassis" and it wasnt any of these things, you should have still walked away as its false advertising even if you bought it unseen.

  8. Hi Everyone

My dad and I are currently trying to convert some coil axles to leaf springs. We think the welder he have is not up to the job of welding 6mm steel and we are not getting enough penetration. My dad has welded a joint from both sides and cut it in half to look at the results. is there someone on here that can have a look and give a more expert opinion as while we are happy with the competency of our welding we are not sure whether or not we have enough power!

  9. There has been some more progress with the vehicle. The gearbox is now full in and supported by the finished cross member and the rear brake line is in.

Work has also started on the 300tdi discovery axles to convert them to leaf springs. My dad has (arent dads great!) cut off all the mounts and we took out the pressed in part for the 3 bolt flange which is being converted to a 4 bolt one and ended up with this...

    post-19190-0-97157800-1381749360_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-59386500-1381749371_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-02855900-1381749364_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-88888400-1381749366_thumb.jpg

and we set about making some mounts for the leaf springs to bolt to.

Now need to find some more time to carry on. Its a right pain not having it at my house to do in the evenings!

  10. My 200tdi can cool itself down below the normal operating temp during winter while sitting idling with the heater on full whack. Im not sure it could do it in the summer though. I dont have any fan on the rad whatsoever Maybe not sensible but it has never over heated even in the hottest of british weather.

Is it possible that you have a leaky thermostat? Open enough to cool the engine to normal operating temp but at lower speeds letting enough coolant into the rad so that the heater is capable of cooling it down below its normal operating temp?

  11. Personal event. Me and a few mates just decided to give it a go a few weeks ago. I did try and climb Ben Nevis before with one mate for an IMechE event. Only a few people turned up and we advised by the visitors centre not to try today... But we hadnt gone all that way for nothing!!! We gave it a bloody good go but with with winds of 50-80mph, gusts up to 110mph and rain that hurt when it hit you in the face we got to a point and decided it was getting too dangerous to carry on  Was probably a good thing cos on the way down my mate and another guy we had convinced to come down with us (yes the nutter was out by himself) were picked up by the wind and sat down on their arses next to a ledge

Was great fun though! Not even the full water proofs stopped us from being soaked head to toe lol

So hopefully the weather will be on our side this time :i-m_so_happy:

  12. Saturday saw us take some axles off a 300 disco to use on this car. Simpler than it sounds until you know that the disco chassis and body has to end up on the trailer for the scrappy! and it already has a load of old g'boxs exhausts and other scrap in.... Well by the end of the day they were off and in the garage. I had started to take some of the mounts off to convert to leaf springs but there was too much other stuff to do so have not finished.

    post-19190-0-21060400-1379966036_thumb.jpg

The cross member is now all finished and the gearbox sits on it nicely. We did have to bend the end plates back straight after the welding but now sit up against the chassis nicely. Its also had a layer of red oxide and one of silver paint.

    post-19190-0-68590400-1379966045_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-16786100-1379966054_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-95596200-1379966060_thumb.jpg

We also had to shorten a transfer box mount that goes on the side of the borg warner TBox. Also redrilled the hole as due to "packaging constraints" it had to be repositioned. This shouldnt be a problem as I am using a 200tdi gbox mount that normally sits central doing the job by itself so this is just to stop too much rotation.

    post-19190-0-55401700-1379966068_thumb.jpg

Also cracked the seatbox in, just to make it harder to put the xmember in and props and hand brake and design the exhaust.and the brake lines... so not getting in the way of much

Well more in a couple of weeks as I am planning to do the 3 peaks challenge next weeks just for laughs!

  13. First thing. My dad made me an adaptor to go in the cold pipe of the rad to the header tank with a 6mm T in to go to the engine oil cooler. This had to be made as I couldnt find a T-piece from 16mm to 16mm with a 6mm T off unless I wanted multiple connections which would have looked a lot messier.

    post-19190-0-75410100-1378898401_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-53208100-1378898409_thumb.jpg

The spacer for the gearbox is also done. Finished profiling it the weekend before and got it in last weekend. Touch wood the input shaft doesnt foul the back of the engine..... It was a rather closely calculated fit.

    post-19190-0-54109200-1378898394_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-09260700-1378898400_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-04465400-1378898390_thumb.jpg

Also been modifying the cross member to fit the gearbox. Using a 200tdi discovery gearbox mount in the centre and have also put a mount off the side of the transfer box to try and minimise (completely get rid of) twist. Whether or this will work/cause the engine mounts to twist more is something i will have to wait and see about.

    post-19190-0-17866400-1378898406_thumb.jpg

But overall a couple of steps closer :) Next big job is to mod some coiler axles for the leaf springs. Then props, exhaust, wiring, brake pipes, clutch pipe, fuel lines etc etc etc and it will be finished! :D Hoping! to have it running/moving by the end of the year...

    Cheers
