  1. Hi

I am looking at buying stainless exhaust components and building an exhaust for my 1uzfe powered S3 109. The standard lexus exhaust diameter before the catalyst (not being used) is slightly larger than 2.5 inches. After the catalyst I think it is about 2.25 inches and right at the very back where the tail pipe finishers (would like to re-use  ) fit it is 2 inches.

The engine as standard has 250Hp but I am expecting it to make more due to not having cats and being megasquirted. From what I have read/calculated from the internet a 2.8 inch single pipe should support 250Hp. So for the silencer where both sides of the engine will be joined I was thinking of using 3 inch pipe.

Before joining the exhaust I was wondering whether or not to reduce the exhaust size of it from >2.5 to about 2.25? I understand having an exhaust too large at this point will reduce bottom end torque and move power/torque further up the rev range which i obviously want to avoid in a big land rover...

Also will I be ok reducing the exhaust down to twin 2 inch pipes after the 3inch silencer? My calcs show that twin 2 inch pipes should support 261Hp.

I have no idea of any of this is correct though! as there seems to be wildly differing information on the internet..... A graph for the calculations I found on the internet is below.

If anyone knows more about exhausts than me (shouldn't be hard, I did an aeronautical rather than automotive degree ) then your opinions would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

  2. Right.... Time for a very hacked off update!

Gave some parts to "Stotfold Engineers" based in Biggleswade on Tuesday 11th for shot blasting. Told them I was going to have it galvanised and they said it would be between 80 and 120 so I was obviously expecting the thick end of that.... Was told it should be ready in a week and they will call. A Week later no phone call, so called them. They said it would be ready for collection today at 2 maybe 3. Come half 3 today no phone call so I went down there. The guy seemed ever so pleased with himself, "yes its ready, in the back on my van, its been shot blasted and painted in red oxide so you can still do any welding....." Pardon?

I didnt even get as far as his van! Honestly FFS what kind of retarded incompetent set up is this! Anyway needless to say they are blasting it again and I am paying them less than they wanted as I am certainly not paying for the paint and there time to paint it in the first place! I also cant help thinking that its going to have shed loads of paint still on it when it comes back or a nice big hole blasted in it where it was "rusty".

Anyway my advice avoid this place at allllll costs! :(

I may have broken some rules naming and shaming them, but with all the posts flaming britpart I find it hard to imagine I have. So if its needs modifying mods please go ahead....

  3. Couple more bits progressing today.

My dad started making some chassis to seatbox, seatbelt brackets today. Not quite finished yet.

    post-19190-0-54884500-1354915814_thumb.jpg post-19190-0-59983400-1354915817_thumb.jpg

And I have been making a cowling for between the front panel and radiator. Also not finished. Its been pretty fiddly as the front panel is not straight and there is nothing to hold the radiator upright as the front panel will eventually do that. Also going to get the front panel shot blasted before welding the cowling to it which means I was having to use every clamp we have to hold the bits in place!

No more work on it till Monday now as I'm going to get p*ssed in Leeds for a mates birthday :P and then the same the next 2 weekends.....

  4. A leaf sprung rocket ship....now i'm hooked!

Looked great mate, curious about the strengthening plate on the footwell though, what was your reason for that?

The footwells in defender and series have extra panels to stiffen the footwells around the brake and clutch pedals. The panel we have put in may be slightly bigger than standard..... but I would prefer to be overkill than underkill before its galvanised and then decide I want to change it after :)

  5. Right some more bits have happened.

Had to space the steering box off the chassis so that it clears the power steering pump pulley.... Also cut the front panel to fit around it.

Fitted a stiffener plate in the drivers footwell,

Bulkhead is almost done, Lip for the gearbox tunnel is about the latest addition I think.

Also started building the front end up more. I removed all the plates off the front panel as they interfered with the radiator. More will be added later on to make sure the airflow goes through the rad rather than around it!

Also modified the series bulkhead support bracket to allow the defender steering column to bolt on.

  6. Only damages easily if its done badly. There is far too much bad powdercoating done in the UK :glare:

Out of interest does anyone know where safari equip get theres done? Only asking cos my dads spare wheel carrier is soooooo plopplops! Dont get me wrong the wheel carrier was nicely made but the powder coating finish was dire! Finish started peeling off and is rusty everywhere. My one from paddocks has far surpassed it in that respect. Also well built but is was for hard top and mine for truck cab so not directly comparable that way.

  7. I have this one for a defender http://www.paddockspares.com/pm724-heavy-duty-3-piece-steel-steering-guard-for-defender-rhd-and-lhd-features-integral-towing-eyes.html

Always recovered off of it never had a problem. Except when someone put a hook too big in one of the recovery points and bent it. Straightened back with a sledge hammer though.

    Equivalent for a discovery http://www.paddockspares.com/pm610-steering-guard-galvanised-steel-with-hi-lift-jacking-points-and-towing-rings.html

Might be worth a call to paddocks to check it is as heavy duty first though...

  8. Right when the topic has fallen off the 1st page its definitely time for an update! :P

Still been working on the bulkhead. Fair Number of fiddly repairs going on.

Thats all for the moment. Gonna be another few weeks before I get any more work done :( but then I have the WHOLE of December to work on it so will hopefully make some good progress and see it running.....

    Cheers
