  1. I forgot about this thread, never did fit the brake discs as I sold them on to a mate who needed them quick sharp fpr the TUV as he failed on them and as work snowballed I never bothered to order them again.

Paul did say they fitted perfectly fine and as they've neen on over a year now and 20,000kms and he's still alive so, they must have been good ones.

  2. Ah ha, will be routing around under there later and will try to dig out the ref No. for front and rear axles, but will point out that the rear is a later axle and not the original from 1992 and the front axle although original casing has differential and shafting from a later vehicle also now running 24 spline.

That is one of the great things with Land Rovers of the past, they all shared that common component, the axle casings, this allowed us to bring the newer and more refined 24 spline hardware into earlier casings without modification, all bar the need for 4 longer mounting studs as I found out.

  3. Need to start getting a few of my other jobs squared away and as the old viscous unit was just spinning round wildly I knew it had expired.

Originally planned an electric fan install but after much learning this past 2yrs I realized that I needed the viscous fan to ensure the intercooler was working efficiently, I digress.

Need a new viscous coupling, options and choices are few and far between.

    Genuine LR @ £250

    Bearmach @ £55

    All Makes @ £18

    Britpart @ £18

Who has experience of what and what is best to avoid?

Really wanted to buy a genuine one but F**K me can I afford £250 :( Mnd you, still cheaper than replacing an engine after it over heated

  4. I run 24 spline shafts from a Land Rover Discovery 1998 model year, it runs a 9" crown wheel and a 3.54 ratio and is of the 2 pin variety.

Do you actually want my running gear physically or just pictures/measurements?

There are numerous threads here on diffs, pretty sure HfH will be along shortly to help you out ;)

    Edited to add.

Your English is good, my Flemish on the other hand is shocking :(

  5. Had to do a bit of work on a volvo horse truck for my GFs boss, one of the front side lights was not working, now upon pulling it apart it was just corroded contacts and easily sorted, but this got me thinking about using the same system on the front indicators of the 200 Disco.

Question is, does anyone know of a bulb holder that is a straight swap for the indicator on a 200Tdi Disco that does stop/tail function?

You can never have enough lights!!!

  6. Well, as I won't see it until it has been for the safety test I am goign to order up a catch tank and see what if anything changes? Some nice ally ones on ebay, just find one with world wide shipping and job jobbed for now.

Note at this point I am on bended knee pleading with the fella upstairs to let it not be the turbo!!!!

Spendometer is already maxed out and so far €1,100 over budget, I blame the steering box and erm, something my GF wanted to put on it too

  7. I am thinking he took his inspiration from a Bull Nose Scannia after seeing the picture they added with it's trailer in the fifth wheel ;)

In all honesty, if you just truck cabbed the Disco and got shot of the extra compartment it is actually very close to what I was going to build out of a RRC along with a custom built horse trailer for 3 horses.

Dammit, now that reminds me of how screwed over I was paying £8,000 for the electric braked axles and 5th wheel coupling that dissappeared during the divorce :(

Now going to go and assume featal position and cry.

  8. Not had an abundance of time for this but when I replaced the steering box again last week I found the post compressor pipe to be quite oily, now it has done barely 50kms since it was all cleaned up and refitted from the last time.

How should I go about searching out the source of the oil?

    My worries are,

    Turbo oil seals.

Excessive blow by gasses taking oil into the intake.

    Where do I start?

  9. Ok i,m talking about enlarging an hole out by possibly 1mm i,ve been in engineering i n one form or another for almost thirty years and i have no hesitation about doing this. On the other had how many people on this forum are driving about in landys with waffer thin and badly patched up chasiss/rear cross members and don,t even bat an eyelid about it . Now thats an accident waiting to happen.

I am 100% happy to do this mod so no more negativaty please

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE PADS I AM LOOKING FOR ???

    Re-read my last post.

All Discovery 1s had the same pads!

Try these, our old works 110 used to eat them regularly.

  10. 1998 D1 rear caliper from a 3.9 V8

Identical pad fitting to the ealier 1992 D1 caliper, yes it is correct that the later calipers have larger bolts, this change was made at the same time as they moved to 24 spline with metric sizes.

Not sure of pin spacing but is it possible they are simply ground back front pads from a later model? The front calipers on that 1998 D1 had those type pads with springs and pins.

  11. Later ones are the same, only the front pads had the pins and springs, and as far as them falling out goes, perhaps a bit better attention on the weekly checks?

I am sure to check mine weekly when I do my tyre pressures.

This "modification" sounds more like save your a$$ when they are down to the metal, not exactly inspiring of routine inspections and maintenance.
