  1. Did I ever tell that I envy people with real metal working skills

This is seriously smart and very, very nicely done!!!

I am actually not sure if I like it anymore though, I mean, it is going to be a bit, well, perfect, but I suppose you could always engineer in some leaky sun roofs and maybe even get a flashy cowling and scoop going on to get the semi authentic reproduction of Land Rover hurricanes at anything over 40mph :rofl::rofl:

Well done, love this build, can't wait for the interior though ;)

  2. Erm Nige, may I point out, that lots of travel means that wheels DONT dangle 6ft in the AIR ! Limited travel means that they CAN and DO ! How after reading all the various suspension threads, did your understanding of the concept end up so back arsewards ? I have to type a Smiley, because they are not working for me yet again.

I think it was more the way I typed it Bill  What i meant to say was or at least try to put it was that for the typical types of driving I do and wish to do, the whole extreme travel and wheel hanging six foot away from the truck is not something that I find appealing or necessary, admittedly I do see where it is an advantage when ground undulations require good articulation and flexibility to keep wheels in contact with the ground, but I don't do winching only really as a means of self recovery, trials are a hoot for me with an RTV type event but beyond that again it has gotten to the point of silly money and grand engineering.

If you see what I mean

  3. Jeff I had an issue to resolve on a friends blower switch, it was a loose contact pin on the back of the switch.

    paulspictures033_zps18186f67.jpg

This is the main power into the switch and it was fixed with just a tap with a center punch on the pin to re-secure the tab.

Certainly worth a look and you will need to remove it any way.

  4. I may have misrepresented myself a little there - I wasn't inferring 6' of travel as being the goal. Merely balanced travel - which was my original point further up the thread.

A choice between balanced compliant and non binding travel against balanced binding non compliant travel - I'd fall on the side of the former.

To use standard parts will effectively rule out both though - due to the axle and chassis modifications needed.

Ah no, not having a dig, this is about a truck that could be being built as a kind of comp safari motor where it is more about speed cross country not boulder hopping or mud running, if it works out then pretty much running gear is D2 as there is one sitting in the yard and I don't like the Watts linkage so want that out of the way, chassis would be brand new and can be built as per my own spec hence lots of questions.

I kind of see the whole binding issue but for me I do not see any disadvantage from radius arms at the back as it will have radius arms at the front so if anything it would even out and balance, or am I over simplifying????????

  5. This is not an exercise about getting silly amounts of travel as I am not a fan of wheels dangling 6 feet in the air, but more about finding a good strong reliable set up that uses all stock components off the shelf from any land rover dealer, but built up in such a way to be balanced and forgiving, oh and it kind of has to look like it was meant to be there too.

  6. Silly question as I have never looked under a P38, but do the panhards front and rear swing together or against each other?

Am I right in thinking that if I used the trailing radius arms then the A frame cannot be used?

Sorry if this seems kiddy stuff compared with the immense indepth 74 link things you guys get into but looking to get my head around how it all works and forces and principles, I read a lot of threads around the net but got a bit bamboozled and narked as the banter and the "that will never work" comments pushed some things I found interesting and understandable off the grid.

  7. i am definately mad, as for how much i have spent,

i have spent £2000 on it,

i had spent £2000 on it after i had put it back on the road, and despite spending lots more on it,

i have still only spent £2000 on it.... Honest!

    That made me smile :)

I have included everything I bought for the build inc, paints and sprays, sundries and consumables as this is a one off build.

£2000, better hope your GF don't sell him one day for that tiddly little amount

  8. Active Corner Enhancement

Best to just type "three amigos" into the search bar, will give you far more info.

If it has air, keep it, spring conversions are for people who are happy to ride coil springs well past sagging, the air suspension is great on them and with a little expert help they are very reliable, I wont bore you here with my knowledge and love of air suspension so if you want to know more PM me.

BTW something like a pug partner van makes an extremely reliable and economical parts run about, will easy do triple the mpg of a disco on running around and cheaper to insure too!

Maybe you should push more money into the D1 and make it ultra reliable and get a pootle wagon for parts etc, or you'll just end up with two broken Rovers and empty pockets, or will history repeat I wonder?

  9. Not sure but look at the chassis mounting.

    Discovery2frontradiusarm_zpse3ff6a5f.jpg

It has a round bush as opposed the older spigot bushing, surely this would be better for articulation and easily set when adjusting suspension heights?

As the axle tube has not changed greatly I wonder if they are a direct fit to the axle and only needing modded with mount on the chassis rail?

  10. Whilst looking for something else I stumbled upon a picture of a D2 rear radius arm.

    D2trailingradiusarm_zpsd87d5577.jpg

From just looking at it I am wondering what advantage if any there is from the radius arm and watts linkage to the old fashioned links and A frame ball joint?

But I also wonder if these would/could be used in substitution of the rather flimsy links with the A frame? Having seen far too many bent ones now I think some beefing up would be in order but do these offer any type of alternative as the axle brackets are readily available.

  11. Rotten chassis.

All electricals work and that the three amigos are not illuminated.

If fitted with ACE, check as best you can for corrosion of the hydraulic pipes.

If fitted with air springs on the back factor in replacements in the purchase price.

Grumbling wheel bearings as they are more costly to replace than D1s.

Basically most now are on to their 4th and 5th owners so beware of smoke and unusual rattles and ANY leaks.

  12. I for one want to protest the rights of criminals, especially those that know right from wrong and still choose to steal and commit crimes, there seems to be rights for all but a system that favors the criminals and criminalizes the victims who fight back.

I shot a guy three times with my air rifle who was trying to steal my motor bike when I was a teenager, got two in his back and one in his leg, never had any problems with police or any one trying to steal it again funnily.

Not saying what I did was right but the rifle was handy on my desk after being cleaned and it would have taken too long to have gotten down stairs.

  13. Back in days of yonder when Britain was supposedly less civilized there was the stocks where criminals were placed and "abused" by the towns folk, it was by means of teaching them the error of their ways and allowing victims to reap revenge on their perpetrator, seemed to work wonders back then, an also not a big deal if they died whilst being publicly shamed
