  1. silly question i know but is it possible to put a head gacket on upside down on a disco 300tdi???? if it is what would happen with the engine running??
  2. brand new head as in not reconned, brand spanking new, changed because it was cracked head bolts torqued down correctly and in correct sequance didnt overheat before this, collant system got pressurised and the radiator let go took the old head for a pressure test and found to be badly cracked in one of the manifold ports put the same thickness head gasket on it as what came off it no pick up on the bores, no scoring or cracks ran it with intercooler pipe off, same amount of oil and smoke so new/recon turbo, as i suspect or engine related??
  3. right before i get a recon turbo i just want to clarfy a few points. took the air pipe offand checked the vains, they turn smoothly, wit engine running i used a zip tie to see if it was spinning and it was. took for a blast up the road, loads of white/blue smoke and i do mean LOADS!! can kinda hear turbo whistling but noticable drop in power not only is it chucking oil out of the exhaust its also coming out of the intake manifold or intercooler, not sure which but when i slakened the top jubilee clip on the intercooler and ran in for a minute oil started dribbling out as i say its just had a brand new head and full gasket kit. it wasnt doing anything like this with the old head on. also head bolts got replaced. SO is it a recon turbo or could it be engine related (piston rings etc)??
  4. sorted now thanks fozsug!! back to the original problem now
  5. ok not sure where the fuel stop solanoid is?
  6. this is getting tedious now, think if i can get this car going am gonna tell him to get shot............ anyway, decided to check turbo more thoroughly this morning, started fine, took air intake off to check blades moved freely which they did, noticed the intercooler hoses were collapsing in on themselves, deffers a problem somewhere...... anyways back to the new problem, started, ran fine on tickover, then just stopped like someone turned the key. now cranks but wont start. took pipe off injector, cranked, no fuel coming thro. havnt touched the injector pump, timing or anything to do with the fuel system, all wires are correct and where they should be. its a disco 300tdi. any ideas greatly appritiated dave
  7. the flexi hose on the exhaust before the cat, or shoud i say where the cat should be, its been de catted
  8. just had a though, on the bottom of the inlet manifold there is a small strip of metal right in the way of getting a socket and bar onto the bolt to remove the manifold from the head. its about 3" long and held on by 2 8mm bolts. as the bolts were so rusted and rounded off i just broke the metal, meaning to replace after i bolted the head back on, how ever i forgot so there is now no metal there between the 2 bolts. so my question is, along with the obvious first 1, what does this little strip of metal do, it looked a copper material, and without it would it create the problems i have??
  9. righto soi put a new head on my mates 300tdi disco while running with the old head on, it was pressuring the coolant system due to the head being cracked now i have put a new head, oil is squirting out of a little pin prick hole of the flexi hose on the exhaust, its obviously under pressure, the best way to describe is imagine a pin prick hole in a hosepipe and water squirting out of that, exactly the same thing is happening with the oil coming out of the flexi pipe!! it wasnt doing this prior to the new head going on, ie- it wasnt doing this with the old head. also it is bellowing white smoke to the point its turning the drive really foggy and you cant see one end of the drive to the other!!! another thing is when revved its making a horrible tinny noise as described in the last post. new injector seals and glow plugs so there shouldnt be any compression issues. my first thoughts is turbo but as i say it was fine before the new head, is there anything on the turbo i could of disturbed?? any thoughts ideas would be appritiated, its getting to the point where am just gonna tell him to sell to recover some costs hes spent on it but i hate being beaten.
  10. coat hanger down between the window and door, put a small hook shape on the endwriggle it around the door lock and when its hooked pull.......... it works took me 20 seconds to get in mine
  11. just a thought, is it overheating in general or on a long run/under pressure/ high speed? (well high speed for a land rover anyway!!!) if thats the case it might be worth getting the rad checked as well they get blocked, some of the fins corrode and drop off etc.
  12. core plug in the top of te thermo housing, remove and rev, if its bubbling you got a blown head gasket or worse sorry!!!
  13. in fairness the 300 tdi is a strong engine HOWEVER i have seen bent pushrods, broken rockers and bent valves on this engine depending on the revs when the timing belt went.
  14. deffo sounds diesel related. change diesel filter to begin with. after that i would say possible blocked injectors etc. am sure someone with a welth of experience will come and give you a more in depth analasis!!! hth dave
  15. its not steam. certain of that. pretty sure its as vulcan bomber said its the injector seals as they were pretty ropey when i put them in. must admit tho. after 10 minutes of it running the smoke did clear a bit. hes gonna run it for the week and see if it clears.
  16. ahh injector seals in properly........................................................... will check this before anything else, is it possible to buy injector seals seperate??
  17. have been trying to get the damned thing out for bloody hours!!! scraped, pulled, lost temper, scraped some more, further loss of temper!! non of it is sticking out of the block its basically snapped after the end of the little rubber seal ie:- the rubber is still on the tube its the other end thats stuck in the block. so thought my only option left was to remove the sump and knock it though from the other side. the pic you have given of the hole is what it looks like now but with the end of the tube stuck in it!! would be a good a reason to do an oil change on it anyway!!
  18. dont seem to be using/ mixing fluids but only just completed the job today brand new cylinder head, new head gasket new bolts so really shouldnt be a problem there
  19. started athread on my mates 300tdi regarding new cylinder head however he has another problem as well so starting a different thread about it basically he tried to remove the dipstick tube and snapped the end of it whidh stayed in the block. if i remove the sump, will i be able to tap the end of the tube out from the inside so to speak?? any ideas would be appritiated!! dave
  20. just fitted a new cylinder head to my mates 300tdi disco. it runs BUT:- its chucking out white smoke when revved would badly set tappets cause this??? also there was a couple of bolts missing on the exhaust manifold, obviously put a new gasket on however would this cause a lack of back pressure to the turbo to cause the white smoke? it sounds a bit tinny under heavy acceleration too. any advise woulod be greatly recieved dave
  21. if it stripped teeth and stopped, then chances are somethings bent ie:- pushrods, valves. might be an idea to take the head off and have a look see at whats going off. bent valves wont sit correctly and bent pushrods will be glaringly obvious. if its pushrods bent its a easy fix, however, if you have bent valves then they need to be replaced and re ground in- not so easy!!!
  22. my 300tdi was bought with the cat removed, flew though MOT no problem
  23. i would change the rad anyway, if overheating persists, sooner or later its going to put paid to the head gasket. easy enough to change, but a lot of aggro you could do without!!! i would change the thermostat too, if the rad is bunged up on the inside and your thinking of flushing, chances are the thermostat hasnt got long left either!!!
