  1. Where from, I'm going upt north saturday, up the A34 to Brum, any good, and obviously back.
  2. Is it Mr. Kwik Fit that offers disc pads for the life of the vehicle, could be an interesting idea to try and yes I know Slab common and its pad eating ways very well, I'm afraid there just aint no answer to to the abresive qualities of sand and goo, if there is I and the rest of the universe don't know it so all I do is use my Halfrauds trade card a good deal and change them very very often.
  3. Like your style, totally agree, just waiting for my christmas present, VAT free evening Machine Mart, MIG welder, 30th Dec, at least I'll get something that I want. Cheers Bill ps. bah humbug pps happy christmas I suppose
  4. OK, really dumb question, P38 electric drivers window, what stops it when its closed, mine runs on and the drive is beating itself to death, I've looked for a limit switch, is it pressure as its got anti trapping fingerythingies or is it in the magic box of tricks. Anyone out there all knowing. Bye the way have a good Christmas, bah humbug. Cheers Bill
  5. Second that, its worth taking time when you set up and tack weld to make sure they are true, I'm lucky as we have both marking tables and big lathes at work, i've just done 5000 miles to and through North Africa on them and not a problem.
  6. Thats exactly what I intended to do, but to be realistic and from from what I've read you need about 20 litres per minute flow to get a reasonable speed and I just wasn't getting that and then with a extra weight of the powerpack and the battery I shelved the project, by the way, I think it was Bull Bar Cowboy that did an exellent write up which is still in the tech archives, I learnt a lot from the project however. Anyway if somebody's interested in the winch I'll dig it out, take some photies and put it in the classified soon.
  7. Hi, tried this exact route a while ago, got a hydraulic pump from some redundant equipment, had a coupling machined at work and connected it to a winch motor, hey presto thinks I, now when I drown the V8 I can pull myself out of the goo, even bought a winch, it works, but god is it slow, I was getting about 6rpm on the winch, which equates to about three foot a minute, if you can get to work good luck, but I've given up. Anyone want a H14 winch, sorry wrong section.
  8. Homemade front bumper on a Disco 300 V8, don't know if you intend to have a winch, but if you measure between the chassis rails you'll find that a Warn X9 will just fit in, so I basically got a large section of angle, 200x200,(thank you work) trimmed it to suit the winch, cut a slot to take the fairlead, welded on side lugs to act as gusset plates and mount back to the chassis, I remember that the dimensions were so tight that I had to use 6mm plate for the inside of the chassis so I used twelvemm plate on the outside to give me the strength back, then I cut two pieces of fivemm plate and got them folded to form the outside sections, I tapered mine slightly, but all individual taste, couple of end plates welded on and then triangulated back from the outside of the bumper back to where the diff gard bolts on, strong as ****. I'd post photos, but as a total computer dunce don't know how, but if you want I could e-mail you some photos. Cheers Bill Oh yes, had to reposition the oil cooler and reroute the oil pipes as the winch sits right back, so I've got about the same approach angle as a Defender now, next its the rear end to be attacked, I have plans, but work just don't know it yet.
  9. Same thing happened to my Disco, the newer pinions have nylock nuts fitted, not pinned, so mine have been locktited on with new nuts , I was lucky, it was a front one, but it let go just as I'd pulled off the motorway and was at the roundabout, someone was looking out for me. Bill
  10. Small thing, but sometimes when your springs dislocate and return they will catch on the lip of the top plate, then you get a loud boooang as they drop off the lip, just splay the lip of the top plate to help guide the springs back in, ask me how I know.
  11. If its not too late, stick me down for a place. Cheers Bill
  12. Good point, yep she has been drowned a few times, more than I care to admit to and slindon mud is a law unto itself so I'll check that . Cheers all for the input.
  13. Yes same question, mines a newish clutch and I'm off on a longish trip in two weeks so I have to sort it.
  14. No, not in reverse, and i asked for a Borg and Beck clutch to be fitted when it was changed, sorry Les
  15. Any clues knowledgable people, disco v8 manual obviously, if I pull away in first I'm sometimes getting a nasty judder, can pull away in second no problems, low ratio no problems, and if I rev the engine slightly more than normal again no problems. Newish clutch, has been abused off road but not that seriously I think, I am running oversize tyres which has upped the ratio by about 10% by my speedo reckoning. So any ideas, I'm off on a longish trip soon so obviously want to sort it before I go. Cheers Bill
  16. Cheers Steve, been on to Stanfords and they have what I need, knew there had to be a site out there somewhere for what I wanted, thanks to everyone else for your input, I'm in disagreement with a few others that are going, they seem to think that before GPS we all huddled in our caves and only ventured to the next hovel in broad daylight, to that end I'm using good maps and a good compass, Silva and believe that is enough, well am cheating as I'll have latitude and longitude fixes to fall back on, just getting them from the tom tom sat nav if I get lost, but its supposed to be an adventure so what the heck, if I get back I'll let you know how it went, if not, I'll just keep heading south and send a postcard from capetown. Cheers again to all bill
  17. Thanks, yes got that one or similar, its the larger scale stuff I'm after 1" 100,000 got some for the Atlas mountains, but they don't cover everywhere that we want to go. Cheers anyway Bill
  18. Hi, am off to Morocco next month, I've managed to get some large scale maps of the Atlas mountain area, but could do with some others for different areas. So far I've got some from World Maps, but not all that I would like, National Geographic, Amazon and waterstones don't seem to be able to help, Omnimaps but there in the states, any suggestions, I see from the getting out there forum that Freeagent has done a trip, probably others also, so any suggestions gratfully received. Can you buy them when you get there??? Cheers Bill
  19. I suspected that, ah well, could be coils soon then.
  20. The infamous P38 air suspension, going down the motorway today, suddenly get EAS up on the dash, maximum speed 35mph, now the suspension looks to me to be inflated and the compressor is running OK, even opened the tail gate to deflate the suspension and it lifted itself againg, a bit jerkily I admit, tried disconnecting the battery to reset the electronics, no luck, before I phone the garage is there any quick and easy way to reset the electronic thingany wotsit, Help anyone cheers Bill
  21. Cheers Mr. Hybrid, all sorted and running, for anyone else out there, the diagram is good, but slightly out for mine so I just moved all the leads one port round and she fired up no problem. Bill
  22. Cheers for that, i did a search on the tech archive, but obviously used the wrong words on the search, thanks again \Bill
  23. Hi oh wise ones, got a V8 here with all the leads in the wrong positions, I think, I've got the firing order, but how do I find where to start on the dizzy cap. Cheers Bill Its a 3.9 by the way
  24. Well it is to run my Rangey, just bought a Tom Tom sat nav and I was wondering if its possible to download from anywhere the LPG garages. Cheers Bill
  25. Yes it can be done, did it myself, careful grinding, hammer and chisel with care, dress up the wheel rim, set on a flat surface, I'm lucky as we have a marking off table at work, but a good flat surface is equally as good, tap in the reversed inner hub, check it very carefully with a steel ruler or better a vernier, tack it in at least three places and then weld it at equal spacings and equal length welds, I welded mine front and back, am now running 255x85x16's with an no lose of turning circle and no spacers, you have to fill the old valve hole and redrill it , I think its about 11mm if I remember correctly, but if you talk nicely to your local tyre fitter he'll help you out. Been running mine now for six months, lots of play days and no problems. Hope this helps. Cheers Bill
