  1. Not that difficult, Have done one for a customer. Remove the center part of the cross member make a skeleton frame and mount the winch in this. Whole thing only protrudes 100mm further than standard and only the center part. This means that only a extended tow hitch need be used and the fuel tank stays in place. Hope that helps. Just looking at all the rear winch Builds featured here, and yes they are very nice, But with three massive problems.... A: You can not see the winch drum, so bunching becomes an issue. B: You can not clean winch properly without removing it from the car C: You have cut a hole in what was reasonably water tight vehicle. All that seems a little strange to me, But then i never was normal My advice to anyone fitting a rear winch keep it visable and keep it simple. Would post photo's, but am completely useless at this computor thing Hope you can make some use of that Jim
  2. Will have to eat a small amount of humble pie here.... The problem is not some much the winch being unable to take the high gear pull But.... After a while the high ratio if not engaged correctly will wear (So i have been told) resulting int he winch jumpimg out of high range..... And evntually losing the use of high range all together. The other reason for not using high rnage is that the power is drastilly reduced. A friend has measured this and the winch stalls in high at 1200kg This is a properly done test, not a home made rig. So, Yes, Stephen it is possible to have to double line the MM in high range, but the advice is use low range for all pulls and high for cable recovery. Hope that clears up a few things. Sorry the reply was not sooner Jim
  3. After the immediate "Oh F**K" Give yourself a bo**ocking for having the front locker in anyway.... Make a mental note not to have left your co-driver (Yes the bloke who runs your cable) At the bottom of the hill.... And gently sob to yourself..... Failing this, stop driving like a girl..... And get the Hell up there before someone else does! Using lockers is a bit like sex... You can get loads of advice and read all the books... But there just ain't no subsitute for pratice! Am still S**T with both (How much pratice has never Been made clear ) All the best Jim
  4. SSShhhhh! Not so loud.... Allen (AKA Alfred Murray) has not found this site yet It is strongly recommended that you do NOT use a Milemarker in High Box for winching and only for recovering cable. If you have a fault (And you will if you keep doing this) The supplier will tell you "On your bike Sunbeam" "You've been winching high box my ole fruit n nut" To which all you be able to say is "A**E" as he pulls up a list of forum posts with photos..... I know it is tempting, but DO NOT use high box, it WILL break. Sorry for the bad news Mate Jim
  5. Eyes of a Hawk my Friend....
  6. What has not been said, is that Paul, the owner of that truck, spent nearly £85 Each way to get those vehicles to that event at seven sisiters......! (He lives in Kent), Include in that the fuel of the van that also went.... And you are not looking at a cheap option.... Paul Wightman, He's got best idea, Big Power transit and 16ft trailer It's ironic, We are off to the Bulldog at the end of the month... Three of us from down south going up, I will be using my 196bhp Td5 def.... And will be the slowest in the convoy ..! Paul's new van will tow better, as will Simons Nivera (Thing) Amazing how far diesels have progressed...... Trailer is still the cheapest option Nige... Just be careful of trailer weights. Jim
  7. Gutted...! Wish i was there..... TerRAIN (Ha Ha) looks amazing... Look forward to seeing more photos... Chatting to James fenny and he reckons its the hardest, toughest, best challenge yet? so once again GUTTED...! Well done once again And again Gutted Jim
  8. Am a big fan of the Warn 8274 and the come up dv9000 Both great winchs in there own right, as is the warn m8000..... And i like most thought when the T-max came out "Here we go, another load of sh*t!" However.... Since this time I have fitted and sold over 30 units, varying from the 9000 to the 12000I all of which seem to be pretty reasonable. We have had one come back so far (Customers bumper was not up to the job, flexed and damaged the winch) So unbelievably i've got to say why not, If you want a budget winch at no money its got to be worth it. As for the ole secondhand husky bit, Well forget all its problems etc.... When you buy a secondhand winch you usally end up replacing solenoinds etc, and find that you could have bought new for the money you spent. Go for it Ali, Be intrested in what you think of it. Have to say i do like the new Outback series T-max 12000 with built in wireless remote, integral solenoid and overload warning light and for still less than half the price of a Warn 8274, Now that is impressive B) Look forward to hearing more about T-max and others who have used them in anger. They aslo do a really bloody good high lift for less than £40inc and a wire less remote for other similair winches for around £100... Which ever way you look at it, its's stuff that for that kinda money it's worth a go More feed back on T-Max would be very helpful though All the Best Jim Ps: Shameless Plug: We carry most T-Max winches on the shelf most of the time Etc, etc..... Eeerrrrrr Not usually my style, Sorry.......
  9. The 3 peaks is a non-compevitive event run by munster 4x4... It's the Bo**oxs pete This will be my third or fourth time... It's run over two days using two different mountain (Hill) ranges, You 1 set one day and the other the following day.. Do not expect pin point navigation, But do expect serious winching, peat bogs and some very big climbs, oh and the odd stream for good measure. But the main point of the 3 peaks is watching team Devon and Team Ibex wind each other up, hilarious Ok it's not, the main REASON IS THE GREAT OFFROADING AND SUPERB SOCIAL IN THE EVENING If you have not been before, GO, it's ace.... Am not sure theres many (If any places left though ) Check out the Munster website for details. Hope to see you there Jim Ps: If you do go the swansea/Cork ferry is the best, Only an hours drive when you hit the other side, Also you can get Mildly miffed cos it's an overnighter
  10. Thanks for the help, i will track him down... Cheers once again Jim
  11. Everyone will always have this argument.... Look at the kit, then look at who is using the kit..... G2f is a lovely piece of evo, But has problems...... Pro-comp shocks, Please....... (Bloody terriable replace them all the time) The system works very well though, and as Will points out the vehicle is very flat which is lovely. But on a defender you need a comprimise between what is effective and what is just a bit to much The Challenger kit is a direct rip off of a type of kit made by Gywn Lewis (They should be ashamed of themselves) And is an amazing bit of kit (When made by Gwyn). Gywn also makes an amazing full travel system that uses OME shocks repalcement shock turrets and replacement rear shock brackets. This system uses the same shocks front and rear and is very well balanced. You can very happily place a front wheel on top of a 205 litre drum with all other boots firmly on the ground. This a a system well worth looking at and is cheaper than all of them. I have been fortunate enough to drive many systems and hope to get a drive in a g2f vehicle before long (I'm also looking forward to seeing it in use at the Bulldog trophy) Until i hve seen it used in anger i will not comment, apart from to say that some of the ideas being used have already been tried and discarded by others........ The extreme kit whether or not supplied by scorpion or it's orginal manufactures,Euippe (Think thats how you spell it?) is a serious bit of kit, and again has some great ideas....... In our experience the only problems leading to poor road handling with this kit is lack of time working out spring weights before ordering or LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO SET UP THE SHOCKS. If you are using the vehicle every day i would seroiusly consider the Gywn Lewis system as it allows for lifted vehicles and standard hieght cars. Be aware of poor imatations though mate as there are some VERY horrible people out there I hope you pick the useful bits.... All the best Jim
