  1. The bush is tight, the sleeve is solid on the bolt. Sorry Aragorn, I don't have the bag with the part number on any more. Can probably find out from the friendly dealer tomorrow tho... Thanks for the advice folks !
  2. Thanks Maverick I'll check out a couple of M14's tomorrow.. :-) In the meantime, if anyone else has any thoughts on what's gone wrong here... ? That said, M14 will be too big for the bushes on the panhard rod itself. Might fit the eyes on the chassis, but.... ?
  3. Grrr... OK, so I bought the "correct" bolts for the panhard rod and was going to fit them. And they don't fit. According to the tape, the bolt diameter is just over half-inch. The hole in the bush for the rod is just over half-inch. But, the hole on the chassis is half-inch (exactly, I think). So, bolt fits into rod - but bolt doesn't fit into steering box drop brackety thing. Pics show the snug-fit of the bolt in the arm - excellent - and it failing to go through the eye in the chassis - tragic. Yep, it's a hybrid as usual... Any ideas where to go from here ? Thanks AW
  4. I hear that. Amount I'm going through, anyone would think I was setting fire to the fecking stuff...
  5. Very interesting. Wi-fi/RS232 is a bit pricey, but it sure would be a fun gadget. Good luck :-) Also, WindowsCE/7 phones abound (or on their way), might be easy to port the existing software via visual studio/dotnet as well ? A
  6. OK, might be back for more info on exactly what's needed - thank for that :-) A
  7. Hi Am going to be swapping my tired 3.5 for a fresh(er) 3.9. The 3.9 came from an auto range rover, so as the Defender is a manual I'm going to stick with that for the time being. Looking for some info - and part numbers - on what all I need to refresh to hook up ? Gearbox is LT85 if I remember right, and of course I'll have everything necessary on the existing kit. Naturally tho I'll be replacing the clutch while I'm at it (and I think the release bearing)? Does anyone have part numbers/links for these consumables, and anything else worth doing while I'm in that end of things ? Also, for fitting the clutch plate, any information on torque settings for bolts, whether thread-lock is needed, anything along those lines ? Thanks A
  8. Just a small update - Microsoft no longer stipulate hardware acceleration for Windows XP Mode/VirtualPC under Windows 7, so if that's had you stuck you can now get round it. Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
  9. I still rate mine. With one exception. In the snow/ice, it wants to go straight on a bit. Which makes cornering interesting at the trials sometimes. That's a "feature" of the design however, in that the locker needs traction to unlock and allow the wheels to run as in open-diff mode. Ice on the floor means that doesn't always happen. Apart from that, still a top bit of kit, IMHO. A
  10. Fridge, any chance you could expand on the lift-pump theory a little more please ? I'm totally diesel-clueless about what its function would be in this, where it would go etc. Cheers
  11. That raises an interesting point, Matt. South of the air filter, there's a little pipe (so between the air filter - which is empty - and the butterfly) that looks like it's for vacuum. And it's going nowhere... I wondered where that was for the other day, but couldn't find a willing recipient. Hmm... More investigation needed I think ! Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll hit google and see if I can find out any more on this engine, see if we can find out what it's really supposed to be like. Cheers A
  12. I did wonder about fuel starvation - but it picks up a bit when you lift back on the throttle. Being a bit ignorant in the ways of the diesel, is it just the fuel filter that's on the engine block ? Is that the only one in the system ?
  13. Suddenly, my truck doesn't depress me as much
  14. Hi folks Friend has a 130 fitted with a land cruiser 4.2L straight 6 diesel. I noticed that the power is really down and not at all how a diesel should run. It doesn't pull smoothly until revved at all, at low revs (away from the lights) it coughs and splutters. And as for going uphill, it's changing down all the way. The engine is very low-tech - there's a butterfly on the air intake that the throttle is connected to and there's no electronics for the engine whatsoever. It feels like when you floor a petrol-carb'd vehicle, and the engine floods a bit, but you lift off the pedal a touch, it picks up a bit more, gets a lungful and takes off. First thought was perhaps a blocked air filter - but we had a look and the air filter housing was empty ! She's not had it long, so we've no way of knowing whether the previous owner had put a filter in it before or not.. I know the powerplant isn't exactly standard, but was hoping some of the gurus round here might have some ideas ? Next stop may be the fuel filter I think ! Thanks in advance for any ideas. A edit: oh, and her fuel consumption is all over the place as well. That may be due to letting her son drive it of an occasion however...
  15. Careful with VirtualPC - your machine might not be able to run it: Processor: Intel®, AMD®, VIA® processors capable of hardware-assisted virtualization, with the setting turned on in the BIOS. Some older systems don't have hardware virtualization, and thus the Virtual PC as posted above won't work. In which case, use this instead: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/virtual-pc-2007.aspx Also, the reason MicroLaunch won't work on 64-bit Vista/Win7 is because they have no 16-bit subsystem and - I'm guessing - perhaps MicroLaunch is a 16-bit app. In which case, you must go the virtualization route with a copy of XP. And of course, VirtualBox is an excellent alternative edit: if you're wondering if your chip has hardware virtualization support, use this wee tool: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx
  16. A while back I wrote about a death-wobble that I was getting on the front, around 40mph plus. It made driving the vehicle impossible and really dangerous. Thought I had cured it with new panhard rod bushes, and on the weekend run it had. But, coming down the hill on the dual carriageway and braking at the bottom, it came back. This led me to the following thinking: there's a 2" lift on it, and the hockey-sticks are standard. Am I perhaps experiencing the shopping-trolley effect, the castor angle is just going that little bit too extreme during the lift and the braking ? Is it perhaps that, that in these circumstances are making this so dangerous ? Just looking for some thoughts on this - castor-corrected arms aren't cheap, so before I get the visa out... .. and if it does come to that, any recommendations for which/where to buy ? Cheers A
  17. No idea if any of these are legit or otherwise.. http://btjunkie.org/search?q=tig+welding
  18. Youtube - with a natural soundtrack, please
  19. Thanks a lot guys, it was exactly as you'd described :-) Cheers A
  20. Thanks Mark !! Crossing everything, hoping that's exactly what it is :-) Will report back tomorrow. Cheers A
  21. Hi Friend of mine bought a 110, it was MOTd last week and all was well. Big smiles all round. Now she can't get reverse, she tells me. Moving from 1st to 2nd, it appears like there's no gate to slide into to engage reverse. She hasn't confirmed whether it's an LT77 or 85 yet, I would guess possibly LT85 however. It's mated to a land cruiser 4L, for what that's worth. Does this symptom with the gearbox sound familiar ? Is it a box-out job, or perhaps something on the top plate if we're lucky ? Will be looking at it tomorrow, just hoped to get an idea or two first. Cheers A
  22. Also, try Hugh at www.portalrover.co.uk
  23. Heater box and servo painted with red oxide. Possibly suggesting it's had a bit of treatment for rust ? I'd be very thorough when checking the chassis and bulkhead out in light of that.... As said, if you can get someone experienced (doesn't have to be a mechanic - just grab the first punter who knows their stuff) to come with you, that's your best bet.
  24. Check the torrent sites out, if you're of that bent - you can sometimes find some actually-legit free instructional vids out there. And a few not-quite so legit, I expect. http://btjunkie.org/search?q=tig+welding
