  1. the exhuast impeller on mine became damaged due to oil feed problems for the front impeller and it caught the side of the casing and damaged two vanes before seizing into position.

i took it all apart, freed it up then put it back together and it whistled like a good one, went well though!!! think i shortend the wastgate actuator too much on the rebuild.

i did this out of interest really as i had a replacement on order. but as SCL stated it could be damaged blades as on mine, if mine had seixed and blades had been damaged but still ran, and whislted more, i would have run it as is until failure.

i changed mine as on taking it apart and putting back together to unseize it its obviously not balanced!!!! which would lead to furthuer failure! the worst prob being the impeller destroying its self and fragments getting sucked into the engine.

  2. I think i would go with Will and the reinforcing on the inside to maintian outside looks.

to bash the dents out of previous ht roofs i cut a peice of wood to fit the curve of the inside roof with a jigsaw and corresponding matching part for the outside the used that end on with gentle application of the hammer from the inside.

if you make the roof bit stronger and still go down the low lane does that not mean that instead of it crumbling in a localised area you could have a larger amount of damage (at the end of the reinforcement areas) or the vehicle just gets stuck and wedged in.

although agreeded that reinforcing it would minimise/eliminate light damage.

let more air of the tyres when theres a low bit?

extend the cage back from the front hoop where it joins goes through the roof.

or jack the vehicle up further, always park it on high ground and then you will never be able to see it.

  3. IF i wanted to fit alloys to my '99 td5 and went for LR ones or LR fit ones what happens with the nuts/bolts etc.

i am aware that you have to get new ones but are they nuts that go on the exisitng studs or are they bolts and you have to remove the studs to fit them?

2nd part is can you get ATs in 255/85R16 or similar size?

  4. Dave do you have any contact details for the guy you got your side exit from? i am thinking of going this route with a 200tdi to stop the exhuast getting repeatedly squashed on events. what did you apy for it?

fitted the Allisport straight through pipe today. as normal a simple exchange job took ages 2.5hrs!!! the old , well not that old 6 yrs, exhaust was corroded together and two of the three rear nuts had to be ground off. then i didnt have any 17mm nuts to put it back together (screwfix lost the order.) so decided to go 19mm instead, bolts fitted the Allisport flanges although the existing exhaust needed the clamping holes enlarging slightly. so one knackered (burnt out i think) 850W Bosch drill later and bruised knuckles and sore arms from filing the holes out its all together. except i couldnt find the exhuast compund to reseal the rear connection so used the old LR supplied gasket - and its blowing!!! typical. front one is tight as a dream.

start her up and yep def louder ( not something i was particularly after) short 10miles test run and it certainly picks up quicker, that is the turbo is spinning up quicker, to be expected as less resistance to the exhasut gases so they flow faster spinning the exhaust impellar enroute.

so pickup def alot better at low grount and much louder when under load around max torque 2100rpm it seems loudest. i will have to see if mog changes and what the noise is like at cruising speeds. hopefully mpg will improve a little, when not pushed, and as long as its not too loud at 60/70mph then it will stay on.

so far impressed with it, however still alot of money for a bit of pipe.

  5. i reckon it should be able to spin by hand eg one finger on it give it a push and off it goes. certainly the case my td5 anyway. where as the old turbo had a oil problem and i couldnt spin it by hand, when started it seized.

i would suggest trying to ease the turbo oil etc without starting.

  6. i've got one on order from Allisport so will comment when it arrives on mpg, sound etc.

main reason is that the gkn overdrive only has mm clearence from the mid silencer which i had to drop 2" on fitting the GKN anyway, so it also hangs down alot and catches going over mole hills!!!

a friend recently fitted on to his td5 90 and remarked what a difference his amd on low down pick up (its already chipped) hence the other reason for going for it!!!!!!

    will keep you posted.

yes big moles around these parts!!!

as for turbo whisltle, its noce to hear the turbo is still going having just trashed my last one!

  7. ok so Tim your pics wont uplaod currently so heres another of yours very similar to the first:

    TimXaxle.jpg

    catchesonthetub.jpg

and thats with extended bump stops

and yes before Tim mentions it (or worse shows proof) mine struggled going up a couple of lanes, i only did it so Tim had a chance to get some photos...........

  8. Hedley good to meet you, hope you enjoyed the day

a good day i hope you agree Tim with as usual things improving as the day progressed.

i have matching dents etc just opposite side to yours!

as usual Telegraph lane produced some good photo oppertunities:

the drop in is always quite good:

    wheremyaxlegone.jpg

need some more articultion to keep in contact with the ground i think

    the same goes for Tim.

i had some other photos which for some reason havent uploaded so will try them again.

Scott - shame you missed a good day, got your test this am, i hope things turned out OK

  9. OK so i have been after some of these for a while, you kow the small nets with an elastic strip across the top, similar to what you get on the back of some front seats in a 'normal' car. the idea being to attach them to the roof/doors for extra storage space inside.

i was only thinking of around 250 x 400mm or so.

so walking around Malvern reminded me i was after some, but as they were in the region of £10 for smaller than the above size i thought i might give those a miss.

so apart from the obligatory scrappy any ideas where you can get them for decent money?

  10. i am just running two Fann tractor batteries, both are about 30-40% bigger than (more amp hr) than the std LR one and they are only £40 each. but have only been in there a year! i can get the details of them if needed. its always worth trying your local agricultural merchant etc.
