i can't see there being a great deal of pull force on the bell housing as once it's on the mounts it has little room to pull apart as if one part flexes the other mounts go the same way

I also thought that but there is probably more than you think with the weight of the engine and gearbox pivoting on the mounts and trying to split while driving. It’ll be worse Offroad.

Doug wasn't on about welding it with the TIG, just cleaning the metal up with the TIG before you weld it with the spool gun. The AC will clean the oxides and the heat will boil the oils out of the castings.

    Exactly this

You don’t need the filler, just blast it with the arc and you’ll see all the junk coming out. When you’re done you should have a shiny surface to attack with the spool gun

Heystee Series disc conversion - with an interesting write up in the description.

    Seller: “This listing a rush-job”

Also seller: let me write an essay on why I’m right and everyone else is wrong, how many different kits there are, parts and history of those kits and make sure I get some damn forum quotes in there so people know I’m serious

we recently had a health investigation at the work place (not sure how to name this) , the guy doing all the test, told me after the hearing test , that they see a lot of hearing loss on young mechanic's who use noice canceling headset/earphone's .

so i'm not to keen on using them (as i'm allready losing some hearing in the higher Hz range , "pretty normal for mechanics at my age " i was told ....)

That is a very interesting point that I had not considered. I knew how noise cancelling worked but diddnt put 2 and 2 together……

Ross maybe stop being a little bitch and just get earbuds and some decent ear defenders over the top😂

Is there enough difference to put a sleeve on the 1UZ bolts to fit the Tdi holes?

Is there a dowel or could you add one or two?

Another question at the other end , how splash/waterproof is the cambelt cover?

    Steve

I was going to say this. Should be a bit more forgiving as it’ll be a flywheel on there, not a flex plate

There much of a muchness, go to somewere like Zoro, R.D.Barrets, Cromwell tools and buy from them. There stuff is far superior to the stuff you'll get on the highstreet, Amazon etc.

Thanks, I’ve found if I type “engineers file” into google I get better results than the normal screwfix condenders

  7. Need recommendations on some new files

Fairly mundane ask but I’m doing more and more file work of late and found that the readably available ones arnt really cutting it(HA!)

been to a few steam shows and looked around the old tool stalls there and although spoilt for choice a lot of them have had their day.

any recommendations on brands to look for?

  8. Forgot to say to you the other day, we have some noise active ones for shooting. They are Bluetooth aswell so maybe that’s an avenue to go down. You can still have a chat while wearing them and as soon as the noise goes up they cut it out. Can’t find the ones we have but if you type it in to Amazon you seem to avoid the H&S price tag

you Can also turn the mic up so you can hear what’s going on on the other side of the room😂

@dangerous doug, do you know what tyres were on that grenaded portal box? Also what terrain ? Rock crawling in the Moab is a lot different to bog hopping in the borders.

I think the V8 will work fine for Stephen's truck and for me I think auto would work really well. The constraint is space for the extra length but that could be mitigated by extending  the wheelbase a little more if needed maybe?

    Steve

Can’t say100% he claimed to run KOH where he snapped a flange off of a narrowed mog casing. Don’t get me wrong, this truck does not see an easy life but just thinking out loud that clutch dumps and side loads from helical gears will kill a portal box before an r380…..happy to be proven wrong though

An R380 should be fine, the 1uz puts out about the rating of 380NM.

Due to the portal reduction I would be surprised if it ever saw that without extreme violence. I recently found a thread demonstrating the consequences of the side loadings in the portal box with 400hp

so potentially the gearbox is not the weak link

    Ahhh a question I understand.....

As much as @Bowie69 would like me to ( he has conspired with others on this forum to steer me in certain directions ) I'm not sold on an automatic, have had no experience with them at all, but I suppose you can say that about a 1uz as well

What I do have is a couple of R380 disco gearboxes, a couple of LT77 defender/110 boxes, a 2a with a series 3 bell housing on it and a series 1 box of unknowns condition

I don't know what the relative strengths are however, the 2a box was behind a 3.5 V8 for over a decade and then a tdi with no issues even when I was doing modified trials with it

So I'm in you hands to a certain degree as to which transmission road to take, my only real contribution I suppose is having half a chance of making it all fit together, something about where there's a will...........

Really appreciate the discussion guys regards Stephen

got to be a stumpy r380…..the lt77 at a push

Very true but then the Lexus can handle more power and therefore torque thrown at it. It's all a question of where you want it developed (which I think is more a byproduct of the crank / bore design than anything in NA vehicles).

As you say it's all swings and roundabouts but there's no denying the 1UZ can handle more power thrown at it and revs higher which in Stephens situation is the crucial bit.

And that is the difference between engines that were designed 50 years apart

  13. We’re getting a bit muddled here. Horsepower is a byproduct of torque (torque x RPM / 5252) so the 1uz will always make more power than the rover due to it revving higher. The rover(from my experience) makes good torque low down which is why I like it….which the Lexus doesn’t have so it’s all relative in the end number.

ultimately it doesn’t matter as the torque  to the ground is delivered by the gear reduction, it is the RPM that Stephen wants/needs. So the Lexus engine is a good choice.

    and

he already has it so there’s no need to justify choices anymore.

    anyway

what transmission do you plan on using Stephen?

    Now you tell me....

The engine is supposedly 100kg lighter than a tdi,  I guess aluminium block helps with that, stuff like the aircon pump will also come off as won't need that, lightweights have plenty of aircon....

What are the adapters for gearbox wise ?

    Regards Stephen

They were for some Slush box I believe. I can’t find the post so it might have sold

Sid is going to be a spritely chap with the higher revving engine AND the 1.003 transfer box :)

Out of curiosity what is the theoretical top speed at the moment and what will it be after the surgery?

Anyone know all the numbers to pop in the gearing calculator thingy?

    Give me 5 minutes

Unfortunately not, too busy trying to create space in my garage to get milling and shaping machine in

I have been looking at crane scales so I can do it at home, p!enty on eBay and seem reasonably priced if you don't want the remote set up, nearly a £100 difference, was thinking of crane scales as might come in handy for calculating future modifications

    Regards Stephen

    I shall see what I can do🤫
