  1. there is the issue, the point where the engine number should be is a blanked space.
    It's a 1979 build series III 109 (with safari roof).

    So could be either a 5 or 3 bearing engine (i'd guess the latter) . Only clear mark I have is the current chaintensioner (looks like a ETC5190T to me) 

    ETC4499 (at turner) also counts 39 links in the chain that is supposed to fit diesel and petrol.

  2. Hi all,

    Please help me out on correct part-numbers (as I've just ordered a full kit to be thrown away..... )
    I've ordered a kit DA1337, however the tensioner looks different to what I'd expect and the chain has 39 links (vs 38 on my engine).

    My spanner looks like ETC5190T (is it safe to assume ETC5190 would be the 38 shackle chain to go with that?)

    Not sure if the sprockets are the same size. Hard to tell without tearing everything off it already.

    But hard to tell if you've never seen such a thing before. 
    How much play is allowed on the tight side?
    how pointy are the sprockets allowed to be?

    Must say that 'doing timing' still feels heavy to me ;).  is there a way I can lock camshaft and sprockets in a certain position and then replacing them one by one (and locking them straight in again) and thereby not loose timing and only having to double check...

    How did i get it off without a pulley puller?

    1. connect a chain (using some scrap metal to get a flat pull begin pully, the blue elastic is mainly to keep some tension)

    2. a molegrip to keep a nut on the thread, placed 3 nuts on the end of the tread that are binding up together to turn the shaft on. The starterdog is in a fair bit so the thread of that can handle the abuse. Later on I continued using a socket 12 in there as distance keeper and to avoid ruining the crackshaft inner thread.

    3. TURN! it took an immense amount of force! I even doubt a pulley puller would have survived.

    don't have one.. 

    As i broke a piece out already and it seems to have balancing holes it will likely be done already...
    Will see if I can find an new one at a reasonable price. (already figured out the only french shop still claiming to be open doesn't have it, so will try and keep it in 1 piece)

    If i replace it I might as wel put the grinder to it. If there's any chance of repairing it and removing it without fuurther damage offcourse that's the way to go...



    just to be sure.... the pulley comes of on its own... not WITH the timing chain cover... correct?

    update: ordered pulley pullers, will arrive beginning of next month. 
    For now I'll just continue with other stuff like rewiring the wings.

  6. and now to conclude the pulley is also quite stuck on... :P

    tried it with some help of the hammer and actually broke a piece out... might be able to fill the missing piece with weld and grind it back into shape (assuming that wouldn't give weird balancing issues...) or try and order a new one (but they don't seem replacement parts to me...)

    Grab a beer mates. I've got a 10 minutes timelaps in which i do this... now cutting an slicing video. (URL SOON)
    Don't take it too seriously. It's a good example of how NOT to do this! (especially the part where I put my shed on fire!)

  8. I'll weld up a tool from some scrap today. Don't want to wait for weeks and then discover it doesn't properly fit.
    Pretty sure I can weld something that fits around the nut and have a bit nut lying around for which I do have an impact socket.

    Also a nice change of things to actually build something instead of tearing my beloved car to pieces and/or doing my daily computer based job from a corona quarantaine

    Love my cottage in France  but not due the adoption of modern 'online' markets...

    another edit: managed to find a impact socket, heading my way. expecting it at the end of the month. 
    I'll already build a shopping list for parts that I expect to need for the timing chain change.
    I'd rather first open it alle up and build a list from there but given the weird delivery delays I feel like getting the order out asap. Hope you guys will have a look on the list and be able to mention stuff I might have missed.

  12. also just realise the big nut at the crankshaft has to come off... put it in gear, a socket or Adjustable Wrench on it and a whack with the hammer? (a rough pull didn't help, with car in 4th it just moved backwards a bit.) Only appear to have a 41mm socket (to small) and a 46mm (to big) :(

    is it a normal thread (counter clockwise to loosen)? 

     

    and thereafter I'd need a camshaft extrator.... 507231.... hmmm I don't even have a normal pully puller...

  13. Slowly cleaning the engine area and finding more and more oily gunk.
    Taking the fly wheel inspection latch of I found the inside covered in a thick layer of oil.... 😕 

    In doubt now if I should try and get the complete engine out..😮😮.. this way I'll not be able to find the timing mark right?

     

    Sofar I've only found 2 bolts that will snap when I would be persistent on removing them. 1 is in the thermostat housing, the other is the 3rd bolt (the one that comes from the firewall side) of the dynamo mount.

    Thanks! coulnd't find any details on this in the manual
    Which I unfortunately only have in french (paper) and PDF in english, but oil hands and expensive macbook aren't friends.

  15. I was talking about the big main pump that is connected to the injectors.
    Had it off, cleaned it and loosly placed it back on not to loos any parts.

    Only thing I'm not sure about if my injection order would be messed up if the input shaft has rotated 360 degreed while cleaning.
     

  16. A question on the fuel-pump. Is 1 turn on the bottom shaft of the pump also a full turn in the pump? (all 4 cyliners) 

    Meaning, would it matter how often the bottom shaft is turned before the fuel pump would be placed back on the block?

    It will only fit in 1 position due to a notch in the shaft.

  17. told u all this was going to be slow! if you want to follow what I do I bet you even have time to buy a series and still keep up ;)

    removed rocker cover, there appears to be 1 bolt missing! can I replace this with any bolt with matching thread?
    Or is this a part-number I can order? (it wasn't to be found under the cover...)

    rocker cover was hand tight! really hand tight as in I did NOT need any tools to remove them... 🤪
