  1. Blimey I got to know Brian fairly well over the last few years marshalling together at Walt's Arena and Kirton etc, he was rarely quiet ..... but always good company ............ RIP mate, ........... far too soon. Our best wishes and condolences go out to his family. CC ........... aka ......... Dave
  2. Alan, all suggestions are worth considering mate, no offence taken Mike, I thought we'd agreed not to remind me........ talk .......... about the half shafts ............ dam Monkey Metal CC
  3. I wasn't aware we had lost "Normal service" Neil As far as I'm concerned it was a good weekend, as for paying me to marshal ............... that's not why I do it guys, nor do any of the other NCGL gang. If you want marshals that work with you offering them £5 to turn up isn't the way forward imho .......... From a marshal's point of view guys it's a bit of a learning curve for us too, we ain't all been here marshalling since the sixties so shout up with any problems ............... wth ....... we can always ignore you ........... Badger and Glaggs lead the NCGL marshalling contingent and the work they put in is immeasurable imho ......... if you have useful suggestions regarding marshalling drop them a pm, or me, whatever, If you have a problem regarding marshalling to date ........... the same applies CC
  4. me too .......... as for the explanation above ............. over my head ........... so; Tea no sugar Ta B) Good to be back mind Dave
  5. Why, whenever I break something on the 110 is it never quite as simple as it first seems I heard a catching noise coming home from a playday at Tong last weekend, seemed to be coming from the handbrake (X-Brake), but couldn't find anything obvious so decided to drive the few miles home. Anyway I've had a look today 1) X brake disc is warped by about 3mm 2) Oil leak from rear gearbox output shaft 3) Oil leak from rear O/S hub 4) Only about 2 mm clearance between brake disc and guard 5) Uneven wear on X-Brake pads and fixed pad loose ............. no doubt due to warped disc and driving home No doubt it's all self inflicted, the only time I got stuck on the day was in some deep ruts / mud and even with everything locked I couldn't get out without winching ............. but, like an idiot, I forgot to release the handbrake before starting to winch .................. anyway that's the only thing I can think of that may be the cause ................. apart from landing on the thing from a great height .................. but I don't recall doing that for a while I know I need a few spare bits for the X-Brake and no doubt Simon can help me out there, but I'm more bemused by why I seem to have blown 2 oils seals at the same time ......... there was no oil leak before for definite ................ could it just be too much right foot and going nowhere ..... Anyway, any thoughts gang, what else should I be checking .............. apart from mi' memory ............... perhaps it's the start of dementia Dave
  6. We've got one, VAT free day purchase as well, so was good value .................. so far I've found it fine, powers all the normal air tools with no problem, just needs a separate feed from the consumer unit, OK might struggle a little in a commercial environment but for very serious DIY I'm happy with mine. Dave
  7. AFAIK It's made by Dana, if I'm not mistaken it's a 4 pin diff and is equally as strong as a Salisbury, but a little smaller, ARB do a locker for it as well. Dave
  8. I'd prefer to go down the route of fitting a TD5 110 Wolf axle, just got to find one first. Cheers for the help and info. Dave
  9. Litch ............. it's a bit of a long story ........ Perhaps I exaggerate slightly ................ The 110 in question was bought by my son about 18 months or so ago on a limited budget, it was "cheap" by Defender standards but for obvious reasons, a quarter of a million miles and quite obviously a hard life, but ........... it was also a good leaning curve for him to be fair. We realised most mechanical parts would need to be replaced and thought over a year or two that would be fine, unfortunately the "White Witch" had other idea's and within 6 months we replaced the front diff followed by the engine, gearbox and transfer box, then the front axle and shortly after the rear axle ....... interspersed with the front prop, lots of bushes, steering box, radius arms, several wheel bearings and the obvious things like pads and a disc or two ................. all in all it would have probably been cheaper and certainly much easier to buy a lower mileage defender ........ but he's learnt a lot about mending land rovers so I do consider it worth while  As for the Salisbury axle ............. another long story ........... as his 110 does a lot of offroading and the Salisbury is like a plough we opted for a Wolf TD5 replacement, what turned up was a 90 rear axle, which we eventually fitted using a spacer for the rear prop and for 12 months it's been fine. He's learnt a lot about driving off road over the past year and to be fair I think he was somewhat unlucky last weekend at Tong, he followed me up a small, but steep hill with a bit of a steep / rocky exit, he stalled just before getting over the top and then rolled back a few feet .............. followed by an "expensive" bang ........... the diff obviously Anyway, this is purely for information and also so you can have a laugh at our leaning curve ................ and as always we're here to learn so please keep it coming Dave
  10. Small son's white 110 has eaten yet another diff ................ this will be number 4 within the last 18 months ............ OK I know it's a "high maintenance" hobby ......... but is this "fubar'd" or is it repairable ............. my gut instincts tell me we should just be looking for another yet diff ............... it's a 24 spline in a 300Tdi Defender Thanks for any input guys. Oh ................ anyone got a 24 spline diff surplus to requirements ................ or even two, methinks we need to keep a spare in stock CC
  11. Ouch to the power 4 This was me 12 months ago after the October 2006 Kirton Challenge event ............... and I was only marshalling Ces't la vie ............ etc etc etc .............. bloomin expensive weekend ............. 4 x 1/2 shafts, 2 x CV's and 1 x ARB ........... was not a happy bunny to say the least ........ but it's all better now though CC
  12. The fact the prize was "Taller" than the marshal did give us all a laugh as well .............. well done Glaggsy mate ........ well deserved for all your hard work, I suspect he's gonna have to cut it down a bit and make the world's first 3'-0" Hi - Lift Jack mind B) We've marshalled on quite a few of these events now and all of them have been great fun, gotta to say though ..... thanks to all you lot who compete and provide so much fun and entertainment for all of us ......... it makes it all worthwhile ............ and they just seem to get better, so keep it up. And Swanny ............ thanks for "not" singing Dave (aka CrewCab)
  13. We were marshalling at Kirton yesterday, great day all and brilliant weather. Here's a few photo's I managed to snap during the day. Dave And a minor problem when setting up the course, which involved mi' youngest son and a foot or two of water in the bottom of his white 110
  14. Been doing a little reading The TD5 fuel system ........... <from the manual> Unlike other Diesel engines, the Td5 has no injection pump. The diesel direct injection system receives fuel at pressure from a two stage fuel pump located in the fuel tank. The high pressure stage draws the low pressure fuel from the fuel filter and pressurises it to a pressure of 4.0 bar (58 lbf.in). The pressurised fuel is then passed from the pump to the injectors at a flow of 180 litres/hour (47.6 US Gallons/hour). The fuel pump has a maximum current draw of 15 Amps at 12 Volts If the fuel pump is working at 4 bar and drawing 15 amps it sounds like a fairly heavy duty piece of kit, so ........ an electric pump off say; a V8, is unlikely to do the job as far as I can see Any thoughts from the more technically minded out there would be welcome .................... errrrrr ........... I think Dave
  15. Got to agree the bolts seem to be in the wrong way round. I put Jate rings on my TD5 110 for a while before fitting a QD towbar Sounds like an angle grinder and new bolts could be the way forward Dave
  16. It's a chipped TD5 Trev, generally on the road it returns about 27mpg, drops with offroading obviously but a 40 litre tank would be reasonable I suppose. With the winch at the rear of the tub a tank behind it then a flat cover over the top has it's merits as well. Dave
  17. Pictures would be very handy thanks, I'll send you my email address Cheers Dave
  18. Under seat tank sprang to mind, but (from above), they are only about 40 litres ............... that gives a range of about 200 miles (without offroading), it's not ridiculously low but a bit bigger would be useful, the Td5 90 tank is certainly worth considering as well. So ....... one option would be a 90 that had been pranged at the front and scavenge the rear chassis and tank ............ not something you come across every day though 1) I'd wondered if there was anything that would fit in the pick up bed? 2) I've also seen fabricated aluminium tanks on a couple of vehicles but so far I haven't turned up any info on those. Thanks for the input ............ it's helping to get my brain warmed up Dave
  19. The thread was started a while back but I've only just found it, yes I'm seriously considering it if I can work around the problems that might come up, being a pick up back the bodywork should be fairly straightforward, welding the chassis is something I haven't done since my SIII days, but I have a couple of willing (and talented) helpers for that bit ........... there's a couple of other bits that will need sorting as it now has a full length external cage and rear winch, again not insurmountable problems ........ but they all add up I 'spose. As for storage I'm wanting to put a full length rack on the cage so what I loose in the "boot" ......... can go on top. Already had quite a few useful tips from the difflock crew and as far as I can see the fuel tank is the most awkward issue, so any thoughts on that welcome ......... as on the rest of the idea. Thanks folks
  20. Resurrecting an old topic I know but did anyone ever take this any further ................. cos funnily enough I've recently been playing with photoshop with the thought at the back of my mind of something along these lines on my 110 DoubleCab. I like the seating arrangement of the DoubleCab and a 90 just 'aint big enough ................. but the thought of reducing the rear overhang certainly appeals. As has been said the fuel tank would probably be the most difficult issue, any thoughts gang ............ it's a TD5 Cheers Dave (Sorry about the crappy photoshopping ........... I'm more at home with a pencil and a piece of paper )
  21. Here's a couple of pictures of Phil's 110 Dave
  22. Well, it's all back together and seems OK so far ................. fingers crossed I ain't broken owt' else with mi' aerobatics Thanks for the help guys Dave
  23. Well I'd already got a new pair of CV's so they'll be going in anyway, I've had a look at the half shafts and they seem fine from a visual inspection, I'll give them another good going over though. Glad it's not the back one's mind, fronts were about £30 each, rears were 5 x that Looks like it'll be a few days before I can get to it but I'll let you know how things progress ........... or not B) Dave
  24. Gathered that's the case so it's bite bullet time and either stick a standard diff in or replace the arb ............. ........... OK arb wins .............. I just might be wearing the old one somewhere in mi' anatomy when the Mrs realises mind Think I've caused a lot of the problem by driving it since it was damaged, unintentional though, thought it was fit and well ................. hindsight's great ain't it .......... it's probably only done about a 100 miles since the new half shafts went in but it was getting worse, I did really think it was the CV's but, not so .......... teach me to be more thorough in future I 'spose Replacement on way ............. do you think I should keep the bubble wrap on it B) Dave
