Baggybird
Hi. new to this forum, I've got a series 2a that had a 2 1/4 diesel (very tired) in it. Ive got hold of a Rover 3.5l from a P6S which I'm trying to install. Can anyone tell me how to fit the clutch and modify the crank? i have a conversion kit which I bought from EBay it has a thinner flywheel (think from a SD1) plus adapter that fits in the centre of the flywheel, from what I've read people say the crank needs to be cut down but I can't find anywhere that gives me a dimension about how much to cut off. It would be great if I could find a site that points me in the right direction to ease this task, I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times but this is a first for me so any help would be appreciated. spcollins
I referred to this thread when doing mine: http://www.orrp.info/smf/index.php?topic=31708.400 When I did my own, i mated the flywheel up and it became obvious home much I needed to cut off. Hopefully this is helpful.
FridgeFreezer
If you can be bothered, a Range Rover flywheel allows a standard clutch bearing to be used (SD1 fw needs an extended release bearing) and makes it drive nicer (I reckon anyway), especially off-road. Baggybird
Wow spcollins just what I wanted, great link with loads of valuable photos. Attached are photos of the old flywheel (top) and new flywheel that came with conversion kit (bottom) can anyone tell me if this is correct for the application as I haven't got a clue what it's from. I'm assuming it's a SD1 but not sure how I tell. It is thicker than the diesel one I've just removed. I'm working on the fact that I'll need to redrill and fit the diesel clutch to this flywheel reading other posts.
missingsid
SD1 flywheel is good for on road driving (RRC can snatch when changing up as it will hold the revs up whilst you are changing gear), RRC flywheel is best for offroad for the same reason as it will stop it stalling at tickover low box. Which is your intended use? The reason for the spiggot bearing change is due to the different diameters of the Series input shaft bearing vs a Rover one. My Series shaft was ground down and a new bush put in but newer conversions use the bolt on bush you have.
