14Platoon
I’ve just purchased an oil temperature sender for my military defender 90 on a 1992 Diesel n/a. The electrical connection end isn’t a spade connection? How do I connect the electrical end to the supply? thanks
Ex Member
It uses a 1/4" female spade connector sideways. Really.....
lo-fi
A female spade connector - the type without the insulation boot the whole way down - slips over the round endy bit like it's a male spade at a right angle to the sensor. 14Platoon
Ps the metal connection at the end is bent, I’m assuming it’s suposed to be that way? It doesn’t really show the bend in my photo though.
western
the disc on end of the pin should be square to the sender body, not bent, just take care when sliding the spade terminal on, pretty sure the question on how does it connect has been asked before. 14Platoon
It’s definitely bent!
14Platoon
Changed the sensor and still no working gauge. Any ideas how to fix a gauge? It looks expensive to buy a new one.

western
prc2158 is a Series LR oil temp gauge, won't work on a 90/110, you need prc7138 --- https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/land-rover-defender/defender-90-and-110/parts/instruments-and-cables/prc7318-oil-temp-gauge-90-110-to-1994.html That's what I had in my 110, it got replaced with a VDO unit sometime ago, old gauge was sold. It looks expensive to buy a new one. You need to check the wiring. Do you have power to the gauge? Is there power at the sender? Gauges are easy to check. Disconnect the sender wire and it should go one way. Ground the sender wire and it should go the other way.
western
gauge needs the earth on the centre post on top of the U clamp with knurled edged nut on top, connects to the other gauge earth points a 12v feed to the + terminal & the signal wire from sender to the other terminal, just ensure the U clamp does not touch any other metal part of it's gauge or you'll have a direct path to earth.
