monkie
I would save the hastle and guess work just send them off to get them done by a specialist who will be using calibrated equipment. I would not trust the accuracy on an unknown pop tester given the high degree of precision required on a diesel injection system.
blowmeover
These CAV injectors are fairly simple things, but your right, I wouldn't use an unknown pop tester to set one up. I might go and see Scholar Engines tomorrow and see if they have one. None of the garages Ive worked in round these parts have one but one or two of the garages we did work for might, gotta be worth a try before shelling out. The problem is there are two different kinds of the same injector for these engines, two different part numbers vin dependant, from memory the book I have only has one opening pressure listed. I am sure the difference must be opening pressure or it could be spray pattern but my money is on the former. They wouldn't change the pattern going into the same pre combustion chamber, or I guess they might if the pattern was too direct. Either way, if I can retain these injectors at least I have the correct ones (both engines are pre changeover vin). This could be the reason so many 19Js fail, the last time I was looking for injectors for one many years back there was only one part number available. steve b
They have a van or two on the road , so will come to your work or home to suit collection & return . They do all diesel work including FIP and electronic injectors , I'm glad I tried them out as the alternate choices locally are not much good IMO . It would seem you are not far from my place so feel free to pm me if you need anything LR or a second opinion on something . cheers Steve b

reb78
Diesel Bob is worth using if you need to send injectors/FIP off for reconditioning.
blowmeover
Ok guys, turns out the pump timing was off, by around 5 degrees, looking from the timing case the pump went anticlockwise. I turned it until the smoke cleared. Its starts fine, runs fine, no smoke at idle, however, when driven it still smokes, only when driven. When stationary, if I rev the engine its clear. Have I turned the pump too far or is this a turbo issue, smoking under load? The blue intake pipe had some oil residue in it but I wouldn't call it excessive on one of these engines. There is soot on the back of the compressor but not excessive. Valve clearance? I did set it up but will check again, I set the idle a little high ontop of the pump by the return pipe but I dont think that effects fueling? monkie
Is it black smoke when driving? Provided all else is fine (ie the valve clearances) personally I wouldn't worry. I have mine set so there is no smoke at idle but a blackish haze when my foot is down.
blowmeover
Nope, white/grey, its not an over fueling thing on boost, more a constant, it will show more on power on. Its definitely not right. I will recheck the valves tomorrow, I have a spare turbo that I can try too but I'd rather not go taking the manifolds off If I dont have to.
