MECCANO
Guys, Looking for some advice. Its not the norm, but the rover t16 in the lightweight has got an intermittent sticking valve. Some days fine, otherdays sounds like a type writer. Can it really be cured without stripping the head down ( with additives etc) or is it just a pipe dream, and i just accept i need to get the spanners out. Its a modern style dohc with hydrualic tappets, if you havent seen this engine in the flesh. Cheers Chris
steve b
more likely to be a sticky or failing hydraulic lifter I would think , and should be fixable from the top if you do need to strip it . Worth trying some hyd. lifter treatment oil additive first - no idea what to recommend though . Some pic's of the engine bay would be of interest to not only me I'm sure . cheers Steve b
Bowie69
An engine flush may well help, buy the gallon of engine flush type oil, it is far better than the additive bottles, run it and change and see what happens. Otherwise it is fairly simple, cams out, replace tappet, new timing belt, which you probably want to do anyways....
Tanuki
In the 'old days' [the 1990s] sticky valves/lifters were a bit of a recurrent problem with the first-generation Zetec-engined Ford Escorts/Mondeos: the standard first-level fix was to add a litre of ATF to the oil then give the thing an 'Italian Tune-up' - get the engine nicely warmed-through then repeatedly take it to the rev-limiter through the gears. Do this a few times, drain the oil and refill [remember to use a nice thin oil as specified: we found some cars [that had been serviced by backstreet garages who thought they were still servicing Morris Marinas] with nasty mineral 20/50 in them when the book specified fully-synth 0/30 or 5/30. MECCANO
Thanks guys, much appreciated. I've got to replace the cam seals, and water pump (cambelt driven) so i think i will use the opportunity to replace the lifters and give it a general spruce up. I'll take a few pics when i do, i lost most my conversion photos to photobucket.
