reb78
I think my thermostat on the 200tdi is not opening properly. I have a VDO gauge fitted that measures accurately. Normal driving, the engine is sitting at about 92C (So a few C higher than normal). On hills it was seeing 95C. I also realised today that I wasnt seeing that classic dip in temp as the thermostat opened initially. Top hose was cool when the gauge read 90C - it should be hot at this point I would say. On one test I shot up a steep hill rather quickly and the temps shot up to just under 100C briefly. Is this likely to have done any damage? This is a genuine stat ~2 years old. Mo Murphy
Mines runs at 92°C, genuine thermostat and VDO gauge. Can get up to 94°C if I push it but I suspect my pushing it is not the same as yours 😉 Mo
Maverik
I replace my stat about every 2 years with genuine. I run a VDO sender to a MADMAN EMS. I have a VNT turbo fitted which runs the oil a bit hotter generally speaking. Standard 50mph cruising around in pretty much all weather it will be around 89-90°C, motorway cruising about 65mph average 91°C, pulling up some long hills and in the hot weather OAT of 25°C+ she'll nudge 92-93°C while I'm working it. 100°C for a short while shouldn't hurt it, but I'd double check all your hoses to make sure nothing is leaking just in case. Sigi_H
Because the cooling system is under pressure it can be hotter than 100°C without boiling. Attention, Physics 😁 Therefore, it can boil over immediately if you open the expansion tank and release the pressure. Temperatures up to slightly above 100°C are therefore ok
reb78
Problem solved - new thermostat and its bang on 88/89C. The old one cant have been opening I think - this one I can see the temperature dip again when it opens up.
Maverik
I treat thermostats as consumables for this reason, glad you sorted it.
