300 Tdi Viscous Fan Removal - What tool?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Need to remove the viscous fan from our 300 Tdi.

I have an order outstanding with Bearmach, BA4912, which keeps being extended out (now 6 weeks) - Perhaps it's somewhere in a container in the Suez canal 🙂

In any case, would be interested to know what other tool options are. Not clear to me yet what is entirely involved.

Thanks,

Simon...

Yes LH thread, - in other words it undoes the "wrong" way. Strike the end of the spanner with a hammer, which should shock the nut undone. Refit just finger tight otherwise you will never get it off again.

I bought one of these purpose-built viscous coupling spanners, and the jaw bent open first time I tried to use it. They are pretty thin, but maybe that one was especially cr@p.

For whatever reason, I couldn't wait for a replacement so I just took a grinder to a 32mm spanner I had and made it into a 'thinner profile' one. It gets in there Ok and does the job fine, and I don't think its strength has been significantly affected. Maybe another option depending on circumstances, and what you have to hand.
