Steve King
Some policies do offer the option of increased sums insured for contents in garages/outbuildings. Some premier insurance policies offer extra cover for garage contents as standard. If part of the garage contents is sports equipment like golf clubs or fishing tackle then increasing the Personal Possessions sum insured could be an option. if you have a stock of spares for your vehicle(s) then it could be worthwhile speaking with your motor insurers. Some companies (e.g. Adrian Flux) offer cover for spares.
muddy
If you look up tool insurance there are specialist companies, I had to look into it after my box for broken into in a works vehicle. One thing I will say is take all the special tools you may have acquired or made over the years and keep them separate to your main box. these often have no value to thieves as they won't know what they are but are often irreplaceable. A friend of mine had his box stolen with a quantity of Bosch injection tools in that he had got from a closing down sale. the value to replace would be in excess of 15k and you must be a dealer to purchase them, I bet they weighed in for less than £30. Ed Poore
Simple solution. Buy good old fashioned tools where everything comes in at at least half a tonne and requires a JCB to move. If they nick it in under a day then I might employ them to move things around for me.

They'll do it if they reckon they can sell it on. Neighbour's husband was a retired machinist, had his garage kitted out as a proper machine shop. It was cleared out one night - through the window... (it was on the side away from the house - they removed the window and lifted everything out there where they couldn't be seen). That was about forty years ago though. Don't know if modern thieves can be bothered if they can't get a Hiab to it.

Don't know if modern thieves can be bothered if they can't get a Hiab to it. Depends on the weight of the machines I guess. A lab I do some consultancy for heard a noise outside (central London during the daytime) and saw some people of a certain persuasion trying to roll a real of cable into the back of a Luton van. If they'd managed it then they'd have made a killing even before the current scrap price hike. Four conductors solid copper about 6mm in diameter sheathed in lead about the same thickness, sheathed in Kapton tape, sheathed in cloth and finally wrapped in a 1mm thick stainless steel twisted strap as armouring. What they hadn't factored in was each reel weighed in at 12 tonnes... 1
