Anderzander Posted June 17, 2021 Share Posted June 17, 2021 The alarm is sounding on my Td5 Defender and isn’t responding to the plip - nor is it immobilising the car. How can I stop it ? Steve King Posted June 18, 2021 Share Posted June 18, 2021 I’m glad you found it! Sorry I was vague about the exact location! I only know about the existence of the fuse because I managed to blow it whilst carrying out extensive dashboard repairs and upgrades during the first lockdown! Whilst the dash repair and upgrade worked fine, the alarm stopped working and there was a really loud ticking from behind the headlight when the ignition was on. After spending several days trying to figure it out, I took my TD5 to the local (non L R) garage who couldn’t fix it. Next I went to an indy LR specialist who couldn’t fix it either! Finally I went to a guy who works on his front drive; within a couple of minutes he found the problem and replaced the fuse! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Then a bit of a drive and pulled up by a river where I had to park on quite a steep side slope. It started just after that. All I can think is that water got in somewhere that connects the alarm wiring and - and it perhaps operates through a switched ground with the water shorting it somehow. They have two types on alarm horns on Td5’s I think. Some with a internal battery (BBAS?) and some without … I think the ones without that internal battery are the only ones that use that fuse? Either way - mine wasn’t immobilised, couldn’t be disarmed, and the noise wasn’t coming from the horn behind the headlight.. I need to find that horn and see if I can see what’s happened. Steve King Posted June 18, 2021 Share Posted June 18, 2021 My TD5s alarm has an internal battery that is supposed to sound when the battery is disconnected, however the alarm battery is cream crackered and I can’t be bothered to replace it! Peaklander Posted June 18, 2021 Share Posted June 18, 2021 Does your alarm pulse or sound with a continuous noise? On my 300TDi the horn and the sounder just sound continuously and it’s terrible. So much that I often don’t set it for fear of it triggering. I also don’t know if it has a timer or would keep going for ‘ever’. I am a bit affected by this as years ago I reprogrammed my house alarm, set it and went away for the weekend. It triggered and the bell was still sounding on Sunday afternoon when we got home. We couldn’t get back any quicker even though the neighbours had contacted us. No one took a hammer to the bell box but I would have done if role were reversed! I have found that that is configurable though in nanocom - you can switch from to pulse. When it was sounding I drove it up the road to get it away from houses. Anderzander Posted August 9, 2021 Author Share Posted August 9, 2021 The update for anyone interested was this: It’s a 2001 Td5 - but a 2002 MY. The alarm sounder started going off continuously - I went through a car wash and then parked up on a verge / side slope. Whilst the sounder was going off - I could still drive, stop, lock and unlock the car with the fob on the key. I disconnected the horn - but the sounder continued and the noise was coming from the same area - though there was no sign of anything other than a normal horn in there. The only way I could stop it was to pull fuse 7 as above - and take a big sigh of relief. After pulling the fuse I expected to be able to plug the horn back in and it work - but it didn’t, and I guessed that was because everything goes through the alarm ECU, and fuse 7 has stopped that. It still locked and opened with the fob - but without the indicator flash, and as said - no working horn. Many hot dry days had gone by since - but still the moment I put fuse 7 back in the sounder was going. So … I assumed the alarm ECU must be part of the normal horn circuit… I assumed there must be another horn/sounder - otherwise unplugging the one I can see would have stopped it sounding - though I still can’t see anything else, so I’m assuming it’s been relocated. I did wonder if it was the bonnet switch - but the alarm wasn’t coming on and immobilising the car - it was just the noise. But it was the bonnet switch, which had taken water in through a split boot and retained it (over weeks!)- thus giving the earth path to the sensor. So the alarm is now all working - the horn not. I can now progress to do some basic tests on the horn: try it on an alternative 12v source and see if it’s just packed up with disconnecting it.
