Your Defender will have anti burst locks.  They are the type that has a rotating claw in the door slot grasp a pin on the B pillar, almost always with two latched positions (one fully closed, the second with the door slightly ajar).  Older Series door latches were mortise locks, like on a house door, where a retracting bevelled catch engages on a striker and hole on the B pillar.  Any flex in the bulkhead, B pillar or the door could result in the catch would disengage from the hole and the door would pop open.  Anti burst locks grab the striker pin in a way that flex will not cause the door to open, even in a big accident.
