modified discovery and insurrance

i currently drive a 300tdi disco p plate, which i use is everyday for work and to tow my racer to events.

but its now got to the point where i want to do some greenlaning, and decided that the disco is in too good condition to do that so decided to buy a 200tdi and do some basic mods, a small lift, some insa 265s, wheel spacers(if req) and some new bumpers.

ideally i want to use this for towing as well so i can free up some money and sell the disco i have now, its a lovely car but needs must. (may have to have a 1.4 transfer box)

I am 27- have 3 years ncb (had more!!! damn it) how much for insurrance on a modified disco and where do i go?

Hello chap,

I am 27, and my ncb dosn't matter as it's a second car. I have a reasonably modified disco (see my sig) and a policy that limits me to 6000 miles per anumn. For that I pay about £350 to Adrian Flux for Fully comp cover with all the major mods declared. I realise you will probably need a few more miles on a daily driver, but you also have some ncb to put towards it. Still, Adiran Flux are a pretty good place to start.

Hope that helps

Mark

Second the Adrian Flux route!! Bear in mind that they are only a broker, though!

02 plate Disco 2, 25 year old with 3 years NCB - paid just over 600 notes. It is standard, but it's a £14k car used for business mileage!

Another option is Snowball Insurance (do a search and you will find some bits and pieces on here). I just got my RR on a classic policy limited to 2k miles per year and paid £151 with the modifications declared!

Ditto for Adrian Flux (my policy is actually with Equity Red Star).

My 'N' reg disco with snorkel, steering guard, etc costs £250 (with full NCB) - I'm 'in my thirties', though ;)

Had quite a laugh trying to explain what a snorkel was to the muppet at Direct Line - in the end they wouldn't touch me, even though the engine, running gear, etc are still standard......

Although my experience with Adrian Flux on the price and cover side of things has been wonderful, I would advise that they are only a broker! They specialise in doing deals for 4x4s ( and other special stuff) but they still use the normal insurance companies in the main.

This means that although you are fully insured, the company that your policy actually ends up with may not be a 4x4 specialist.

I only say this because when I had my little claim back in September, the actual insurance company (Royal Sun Alliance) didn't have a recognised Land Rover Repairer on their approved list. They offered me no end of bodywork shops that were on their list, but none of them were Land Rover Approved. This meant delays while the engineer inspected the car and the garage that I (the one who pays the money - how dare I) wanted my car repaired at to maintain the warranty on the vehicle.

This may not be a major issue for those who run vehicles that they maintain and fix themselves (it certainly wouldn't worry me for the RR), but in this instance it is a car that the company fund via allowance, therefore everything needs to be in tip-top order.

Just a point worth noting. You pay the money to the 4x4 insurance specialist, but actually get generic insurance policy number 7 from the actual insurer.

2 pennies in the pot!

You are entitled to take your vehicle to the bodyshop of your choice.

Some insurers remove the "free loan car" entitlement if it isn't an "approved repairer".

As a non LR approved bodyshop may invalidate the manufacturers anti-corrosion (haha) warranty, they cannot argue, and must concede to your wishes.

Another for Adrian Flux.

I saved money when insuring my 3.9 hybrid with all declared mods to the tune of £140 when compared to a standard unmodded RR Vogue SE as it was. The other insurer was Lancaster, a landy specialist(???), and it went to fully comp from TPFT as standard. I am 30 though with 8yrs NCB, but the truck is insured to be kept in a farmers field and not at my home address(which was more). Got down to £238 from £370. I also have a company insured lease car so it is a second vehicle affectively.

Another one to try is the National Farmers Union - my Range Rover is with them (~£700 fully comp, all drivers over 25, main driver 30, 25K/year and all mods - admittedly modest ones - declared, ~4yrs NCB, 1 declared no claim accident). Adding an additional vehicle for a week is just a phone call and about £15 on the account for the same cover, which is very handy if you have more than one vehicle and only use one occasionally.

Have heard that the NFU local offices vary considerably - I use Thirsk, on the recommendation of a friend, and have always found them very helpful.

Never had to claim. The only hassle I've ever had was getting permission for the Megasquirt - their underwriters insisted on a written explanation of what I wanted to do, and want an engineers report when it's done. No addition to the premium, though, after all that.

There was no issue with me swapping to my chosen repairer, other than 4 days lost due to the time it takes for the inspection and the garage getting the 'nod' as it were! The courtesy car remained, but I did have to put it on my insurance so that cost me in admin charges...

My comments were only added to make sure that people are aware that although insured with a 4x4 specialist (Adrian Flux in my case) the policies are farmed out to the highest bidder (or lowest, but you get my point!!) so it doesn't mean that your policy is held by a company that know stuff about your particular car.

For example:

Me - "Hi there, I'm ringing up to check the progress of my claim ref: ####### for my Land Rover Discovery"

Ins - "Your what?"

Me - "My Land Rover Discovery"

Ins - "Oh, is that like one of those Range Rover things??"

Case rested!! I did bang my head against the wall at that point!!
