It suddenly occurred to me that some of you might know of an old friend of mine, Ian McLean Chapman. He and I worked together for a Brit company (Ferranti) back in the 80's He is a Scot, ex-Sandhurst, Army, a Diver, and when I knew him we were developing mine-countermeasure systems for your MOD. He became a driver for the UK in the old Camel Trophy series, and then Reynolds, the organizers, offered him a job and the last I heard from him he was headed to Madagascar.

I rode with him all over the UK, and spent some weekends with him and his family at his home in Aboyne, Deeside.

I thought perhaps at least one of you might have run across him over the years.

Thank you all. I have registered for the Camel Trophy forum, and am awaiting confirmation. Jules, an email address would be better for me than a phone number. The telephone system here is atrocious and expensive, but the internet bypasses it. hence our heavy use of email wherever possible.

I would love to catch up with Ian. We spent many a happy time in Scotland, England, Massachusetts, Singapore, Germany, and San Diego helping one Navy or another figure out how to find and disarm sea mines. He does love his single malt...

TRY offroad@supanet.com. I think he now runs around in a swiss 110 with 2.8 isuzu and 4 speed auto box, and he runs a fishery in Wales. I think its him, ex army, ex camel trophy scout, called Ian,? Tell him stumpy says hello! We met in feb in wales in the snow in a pub, I was up there on a CYCLING weekend!!!! great fun, and a great bloke to chat to, must have been with him 2 hours!!!!!!!! He was having trouble with his web site, so if you have difficulty pm me and I have another e-mail ad for him. Let me know how you get on!

Thanks Stumpy, I have emailed that address. Fisheries sounds plausible. He ran a diving/ROV company called TI Diving out of Aberdeen in the early 80s. Explosives expert for the Army. The the stint with Ferranti, where I met him.

Tall chap, curly brown hair. Drinks single malt whisky, sings baritone after a few of them. Ears that look like a taxi with both doors open?

Yes! Thats the silly booger, I would know that smile anywhere! Thanks much. I will track him down now, I suspect.

And I've got stories I just bet he doesnt want told. I was with Ferranti ORE myself for 19 years, and was the product manager for the systems Ian and I were modifying to work in military applications.

Well, thats good info. So now I know Iain is re-married and running a hotel near Canturbury....any idea the name of the hotel?

I wrote the McLean Chapman email address, and have not received a reply. Neither has it been bumped back, though.

Maybe thats a side business to the hotel.

Would love to catch up with the old reprobate.
