I had headlamp protectors on mine but while trying to get Moglite's Ibex out of the mire one night a tree fell on it and knocked one off. Headlight kept working though. You get off-cuts on there quite often. I picked 400mm s sheets for 4 pounds each. Extremely strong and lasts well. You easily cut it to shape with a jigsaw too.
