steve200TDi
Hi, My gearbox seems to be leaking where it is sandwiched together, so a new gasket is a major job (I've never taken a gearbox out before!). Any other ideas on how to cure the leak, I spose you could use some sort of sealent. Any ideas? Steve
white90
Mine has done this ever since it was replaced I just cleaned the joint and put silicon over it, I reapply if it comes off
steve200TDi
My gearbox is still leaking! I am thinking of changing the remote houseing gasket (the bit that the g-box and t-box levers sit in). As it seems to be leaking around the top of the gearbox. I know I will have to disconnect the transfer box linkages to take it off, but what else would I need to take apart/remove. How is the gear lever linkage shaft connected to the main gearbox linkages. Is it possible to take the whole assembly off in one go? Any advice greatly received. P.S. I've checked the breathe hose and it is not blocked. If this doesn't work I will have to think about taking it to a garage/specialist to change the gasket that joins the main gearbox halves together. Les Henson
Do you mean where the gearbox is bolted to the trasfer case? If so, you can remove the transfer case seperately and replace the oil seal, although you have to be very careful not to damage it when you re-fit the case (they are awkward things to manhandle delicately. A bead of RTV sealant around the two mating faces will help as well, Seal on the gearbox - And one on the transfer case - Les.
steve200TDi
Thanks for the reply. No, its at the top of the gearbox above the 5th gear end. I've arrowed the gasket I'm planning on changing in the image below. Hope this helps! Oil seems to be leaking around this area, so I'll have a go at changing it. Can you take the whole unit off or would you need to to take it off in sections? I know that you would need to disconnect the transfer box linkages, but I am unsure after that. kiall
u wont need to take it out for that gasket u can do it from the top
Les Henson
You need to remove the gear lever (17mm spanner/socket, then the transmission tunnel cover, then undo 4 x 10mm head bolts and the gearstick housing will lift off. It might be possible to do it without removing the transmission tunnel cover, but you will be able to tell if you have enough room to undo the 4 bolts once the gaiter and foam pad are removed. Les. steve200TDi
I gather I will need to take the tunnel out and even the access panel under the centre seat, but thats easy to do. I've added another picture to clarify. No: 11 in the diagram is the gasket I plan to change. Can all of the parts that sit in the tray (No: 10) stay in there when you take it off. Are ther any fiddly linkages that need disconnecting between the gearbox and tray above (No: 10) or does the shaft sit in a groove. Sorry to be a pain, it seems that it's all getting a bit confusing! JimAttrill
And the leak is normally the intermediate shaft o-rings anyway.
steve200TDi
I now have the neccessary gasket and so I thought I'll have a go at changing the gasket arrowed in the picture below. By dissconnecting the transfer box linkages and reverse light cable and removing the four bolts that secure it to the main gearbox I could then take the hole assembly off in one go. I gave the gearbox a bit of a clean as well as the remote housing and fitted a new gasket. Only time will tell if it has cured the leak. I'll have to see what happens tomorrow!
