Steve 90
As the title says really. Moving the rad on my truck and want to do away with the oil cooler. I know I could just loop the pipe from the filter housing back into itself and if theres nothing available then thats what I will do. But id like to do away with the pipe's all together so does anyone know if there is a housing (maybe off N/A diesel or something) available that will fit a Tdi and doesn't have the pipes for the cooler? Cheers. Steve.
western
you can keep the existing oil filter head & just add the parts highlighted in Red on the diagram below [for a 2.5 4 cylinder petrol engine] except for item 1, or buy item 1 & all the parts within the - - - line come pre-asembled to it. even the gasket is common to both engines to compare part numbers see my thread here
Steve 90
Brilliant, I'll get on the phone in the morning. Thanks. Steve.
western
if you want to find a new home for the removed parts, I'm sure I can find lodgings for them
JST
How detremental would not cooling your engine oil be on a road going vehicle? (as opposed to a challenge truck?)
western
for normal road use it probably wouldn't be, but when doing heavy towing/slow off-road work & stationary winching it would definitly help remove excess heat from the engine.
Daan
I would not remove oilcooling from a turbocharged engine myself; that turbo relys on it!
miketomcat
on my tomcat (200tdi) as the rad is in the back i had the same problem so i looped a copper pipe around at the front behind the grill. at the last MOT the tester could not get the oil hot enough to do the emmisions test so i guess i've got enough cooling. mike
mmgemini
The word Oil Cooler here mean a different thing to an oil radiator. All this heat exchasnger consists of is a tube about 19mm OD inside the right tank of the radiator. So does the oil cool the water or the water cool the oil ? There's also a thermostat at the top of the filter housing for the oil. mike

Miketomcat, I suppose your MOT tester didn't run it long enough! You also have oil fed pistoncooling on a TDI I believe, So I doubt very much it is going to like it when pushed hard. My 2p anyway.
