TD5 Disco Auto into TD5 Defender??

I am thinking about putting an auto into my 90, (2005 TD5) and have a few questions ;);)

I'm looking at picking up an auto box out of a Discovery II TD5, that can be had with everything, oil cooler, pipes, selector etc.

One question I have is about the electronics. What are the options/issues here??

It's possible to get the loom and gearbox ECU controller too, but can these be linked up to a Defender ECU, or a Defender ECU running a Discovery map??

Another option I've seen in their advert in the mags is Ashcroft's Compushift. Does anyone have experience of this.

I assume I'll need custom propshafts front and rear? Anything else that will need to be done?

Lastly are there any issues in fitting oil cooler etc into a TD5 Defender?

Cheers

Steve

Steve, I reckon your best bet would be to talk to Dave Ashcroft about it.

The Discovery 2 autobox certainly needs the gearbox ECU to operate, but I reckon a simpler solution (which I think is what Ashcrofts did on some of their earlier Td5 conversions) would be to fit the purely hydraulic auto (as fitted to a 300Tdi auto Discovery) but with bell housing/torque converter swapped to suit the Td5 engine. The only thing I am not sure about is how the TC lock up is controlled on the Td5 TC, because the D2 boxes have a lockup on 3rd as well as 4th, while the Tdi/V8 boxes out of a D1 only have the lock on 4th gear, and I guess the Td5 TC lockup is probably controlled by the electrickery.

I guess you could put a Discovery engine ECU in, get it to talk to the Discovery gearbox ECU, and have the best of both, but it might be fun getting it all to work :)

I like the idea of the Compushift...

I have a compushift fitted to my TD5 with disco II auto box - sadly i cant comment on it in use as ive not driven the car since the gearbox change but dave ashcroft is really helpful and nice chap to deal with and fitting it was a doddle.

Thanks for the info guys, seems like Compushift is the way to go then. I exchanged a few PM's with Ian, Porny, and it seems that the Disco box ecu with a disco engine ECU should work with some changes, but it would be a lot of work and hasn't been done yet so unknown entity.

Only thing putting me off Compushift initially was the £750 +VAT price tag, but in the end it looks like it's going to be best option.

Hi Steve,

We are fitting an auto kit next week to a 110 TD5 using the compushift,

I see you are only in Cambridge, you are welcome to drop in and have a look to see how it's fitted.

It really is a very nice bit of kit, allows a lot of flexability to adjust it how you want it to drive in terms of shift points, shift pressures, lock up speed Etc. Even if you did manage to get the stock ECU working you would not be able to adjust these parameters so it may not drive too well.

We also have the compushift in our 2.4 TDCi auto demo 90 which you can have a drive of,

let me know,
