bobtail

im looking for a ball park figure on price for a bobtailing a range only a small cut hoping on keeping the tank in the same place thanks

If you are only looking at a "small cut" I would say very strongly "Don't". Search for the "Definitive Bobtail SVA" thread on here and you'll see why.

You won't keep the same tank with any amount removed IMHO and it would be pointless as you would still have a huge rear overhang.

Read the SVA thread and post back up... :(

If you do decide to bobtail then I have an excellent fuel tank for sale - search for the "Bishtail" thread in members vehicles. :)

as bish said if you touch the back in the slightest you loose the tank

ive cut 20" off the back of mine but ive had to get a custom fuel tank made to keep it underneith as i have a 90ltr lpg tank in the boot

if you want to keep the car a road going car then consider a massive lift and some huge tyres as the sva is a problem for bobtails at the moment untill the decide to catagorise them propperly

as for price depends on what you want mines cost me just over 3k so far but then i have done a full bebuild and a respray, doing all the work myself has kept the cost down alot

mines been done to the best of my ability as i dont belive in cutting corners where my familys safety is concerned

you want any advise or pics drop me a pm im happy to help

as said above if your only going to remove a small amount of over hang, i wouldnt bother as it is alot of work if done to a safe standard. but really just to create a bobtail its not terrible expensive if you have the equpement required. although it does generally lead to other mods which do cost money.

i think the main factor of bobtailing is time if you want it right dont rush it and carefully think your cuts or it can look rubbish, not a good start for an sva

the cut i wanted wasnt 4 better angles for off roading it is because IMHO i think the back looks to long so just wanted a bit so it looks right (for me) TBH i dont find a prob with the hang on my disco just as i already said i just think they look abit to long

hear is what i mean ..... i just think the 2nd pic looks much better but if it is that much of a pain for the sva i dont think i will bother shame think i might stick with the disco then

All it takes is a VOSA inspector at the side of the road pulling in random vehicles (of course they wouldn't target any specific vehicle groups when doing this... ) and you can watch all of your hard work and hard earned get put in a crusher.

They don't charge you to watch!!!

Of course there are all sorts of arguments that you've told the insurer about it, but at the end of the day, the V5 will still say it's a Range rover......and it's not, therefore all of your tax, MoT and Insurance become invalid. I value my driving licence......... but feel free to take your choice.

right looking into this again

ive heard alot about modified vehicles being done for being unsafe with just lifts and the like :o

so my plan is to do everything i want to it (eg lift, tyres, winch, cage, bobtail etc) then have it tested so it will be 100% legal

thanks for all the help people :i-m_so_happy:

Don't forget, loads of build photos and make sure they don't give the impression of a business workshop as you will be wanting to declare this as an 'Amateur build'.

The wording goes....

blah, blah, blah by you or by someone on your behalf who is not in the business of building motor vehicles blah, etc.

I think they would regard a 4x4 specialist/garage as being in the business of building motor vehicles.
