trogers
Hi all, Can anyone suggest the best way to repair the side lips in the boot area when replacing the boot floor. I have just stripped my floor out and the damage to the side lips is quite extensive. I took some pics of a completed floor replacement to a local mot station and they told me that pop rivets and bolts would not pass the test. Appreciate the help and advice. Thanks in advance
Mark
Have a look in the tech archive for the boot floor replacement in a range rover - the principle is the same for a discovery. The sides are available as repair panels too, if they are really that disintigrated
disco_al
I took some pics of a completed floor replacement to a local mot station and they told me that pop rivets and bolts would not pass the test have seen a lot done like that in the past and did wonder. i suppose it depends on the tester really, although it should be spot/seam welded as per factory fit by rights. quite a few go along the edges, and IIRC, some have been repaired using angle section. ThreeSheds
... should be spot/seam welded as per factory fit by rights. Is that right? I thought that they were riveted/bolted so as to allow for fuel tank removal?
Mark
Range rovers had both - ally floors were rivited and steel ones were welded. In theory they are not an mot fail as they do not constitute structure of the vehicle, but these things are all subject to the interpretation of the tester. Personally, I think the best thing to do on a disco is to fix the edges (need to be welded), and fit a shortened ally floor out of an early (pre 86) rangie with rivets. disco_al
strutural is a grey area on these i would think , as they have the rear seat belts passing through them.... but as said it's all down to the tester. corrosion is always a fringe subject with testers

Thanks in advance hi I replaced floor in my 200tdi disco 6 months or so and it passed mot no problem.I was told the floor could be rivetted as long as it is secure .on the original floor it was spot welded. placed the rivets in the same locatation were the spot welds would of been.one thing about rivetting is that it is easy to remove floor for future work or inspections to be carried out and re rivetted again, advice i would give if you are going to rivett it is use a good quality rivets. Drizz
I welded in a stainless floor. Itll never rot again (just all around it will disintergrate LOL)

Thanks in advance I had the same problem. I got a fabricator mate of mine to fold the steel in a z section - tried to upload a publisher drawing but wont let me.. then welded in to the sides. I used 1mm sheet steel but may be better to go thicker... I bolted and pop rivetted - no probs with the MOT and recommended by a landrover specialist.. If you do this, watch the fuel lines and fuel tank (Doh!!) let me know if you need any more info or pm me your email address and I'll send the drawing.. cheers Phil
