Off Road Comms

Plus a PA speaker for advising people/telling cars in front their fog light is on and it isn't foggy

Wish I'd paid the extra £10 for a PA system, the crazy things you see on the roads...

At some point I need to look into making a roof console to mount mine, I think that woul dbe the best place for it but I need to rip the sunroof out first and plate over it. It only leaks anyway...

What's the smallest serviceable aerial for a cb?

Ultimately, as small as you like.

No, i'm not (for a change) just being an arse, but with an electronic groundplane and then an electronic amplifier you could have an aerial that's tiny because the electronic wizardry fakes the equipment for you.

I know a chap who gets miles of crystal clear reception in his wagon with an electronic groundplane, a double wind coil to get the right SWR (or something like that) length and the aerial is about 8" overall. Anything's possible if you know what you're doing.

Personally, i've got a Trucker 80 like Chris has! Good old Thunderpole, i love their site.

CBs, PMRs & aerial porn!

I am sure there is another good thread round here somwhere with lots of good pictures of where to mount our cb in a disco...

however, in the meantime, this is where I had it in my 200. It looks close to your leg, but I never once found it a problem there:

Can't believe it - after posting that and then coming out from work - some one's nicked it tonight :(

Wasn't cheap either.

Sigh

some people are "Persons Resembling a Pink Starfish" aren't they?

Trying to think where it could have happened - at work I park in a secure carpark, so if it was nicked there its someone I work with. I parked up in town long enough to buy some lunch - lots of school kids about then. If not there then it was in my village last night and I didn't notice this morning

:(

Maybe I didn't tighten it enough.

Ahh well - other people have lost more.

maybe nobody nicked it & it fell off with no outside help, happende to one of my ham antenna before, do use the rig while there's no antenna attached cos you blow some bits inside the rig 7 that'l cost even more to fix.

Just to come back on track......one thing I've learn't about off road comms is that the unit you are using is totally useless unless the guy at the other end has compatible set to talk back with.

IE. I think the US CB radios works on 27 mhz where as the tiny little PMR sets work on a different band width altogether.

I was lucky enough to find a set from Singapor that switches between UHF/FM and the PMR freqs..great little set for 150 quid. Plus it uses a tiny little antenna that I keep inside the car on a mag mount on top of the CD changer!

The hand held PMR's are fine if you use them with a the ear peices and the CB's are semi-okay if used with an external speaker.

Just my tuppance.

Never used electronic groundplane wizardry but just properly earthing your aerial is a wonderful thing. Fat braid down to the chassis is good or even fit a square foot of 2mm sheet steel under your bonnet/roof and earth to that.

If you're really poncing then get a big metal stake, slide it into the ground and earth to that with a battery jump lead when you're stationary.
