not in a saturday night fever sort of way tho. lol.

im a new member, so hello!

while ive been a mechanic for nearly 10 years, ive not really been around 4x4s much working at a german car specialist.

been look getting a discovery to replace our lasses 06 jimny jeep. at the price range im looking at, ive figured out that i want a facelift 300tdi.

went to look at this the other day.....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-N-LAND-ROVER-DI...%3A1|240%3A1318

ive done a search etc but..... is there a specific buyers guide on here for these? link?

looks very tidy, seemed to drive nice....... was happy with it, so left a deposit!

just got a couple of questions about it;

both front swivels are a little pitted and the seals are leaking. what does a bad leak on these look like?? ive look at the repair manuals on here... doesnt look like alot of work and would be comfortable doing it myself...... but how much do you recon it would cost parts wise?

also there appears to be a gear oil leak from the box/transfere box. there was definate wetness all around the casing and on the o/s chassis around the box too. there was also a corresponding drip from the leak onto the floor where it was parked.

is this something to worry about? or do people with a similar leak just top up the level every month?

above all, shall i try to drive him down on the £2k he wants for it???

thanks!

I would drive the price down to about £1200 mate thats what i bought mine for,I would want a perfect example with leather and all the toys for that money. The swivel are around £60 notes each and come with a complete fitting kit and all the gaskets needed from paddocks. As for the t/box i cant really comment as I havent had any issues with mine yet, probably just a gasket or something. Is this the first one you have looked at?

Obviously photos are difficult to judge, but even so that looks like one very clean and tidy vehicle. There are loads to choose from, so buy on condition. When I was looking I found most at this price point were heaps of rust, with bodged modifications and mega high mileage, lots of stuff not working, off road abuse etc etc.

This one looks like it still has the original supplying dealers sticker on the window and matching spare wheel cover and original radio/cassete ? So if it's as good as the photos suggest and in original unmolested condition, 2K looks like a bargain to me.

Did you do the deal, if not I'll have it!

cheers for the advice chaps! :)

if its only £60 a side for the repair kits then ill give it a whirl.

its the first one ive been to look at yeah. my uncle used to have one like this till a couple of years ago... had 216000 miles on it! and he only spent money on it when it broke (preventative maintenance was not his "thing" lol). to say it was worn out, rotten turd would be an understatement!

this red one was really nice tho. completely original (including the stereo!) was looking for signs offroad abuse couldnt see anything.

only bit of ally corrosion i could see was a couple of bits on the rear arches and small bubbly bit in the recess round the rear lights. bit of a scuff on the plastic o/s front bumper and water in one of the front indicators. every panel was straight.

think im guna go for this then.

i cant see another one being any better than this one, from the ones i see on the local roads anyway!

Even on road only use will cause the following to rot:

- sills (under the plastic trim under the door)

- seat belt anchor points for rear seats in the wheel arch

- rear boot floor

Then check gearbox for wear by going from 1st to reverse and listening for excessive clunking/drive lash (though there will always be a good bit of clunking).

Check every electric item there is, with extra trim if something isn't working it might be a real pain to get to it to fix.
