pw8757
Just in case someone has the "Golden Bullet" for this and can give me a response that will save me doing endless checks around the vehicle, my Disco is as smooth as you like until just about 70 (speedo reading, more like 65 according to those very helpful speed indicators the Police have kindly started leaving around the place). At this point a vibration starts, similar to unbalanced wheels and more at the rear of the vehicle. Definitely not coming up the steering column. I have had all four wheels balanced at a local and reputable tyre outlet. This reduced, but did not eliminate the problem. Running BFG AT's on original rims. 91k miles, nothing done to the back end since I got the vehicle @ 49k except new calipers and diff oil change about 12k ago. There is a small leak of oil from the diff.............. Any suggestions folks? All responses gratefully received.
ste clark
have you tried jacking her up and trying to shake the wheels?? could be a loose or knackered bearing.... i have had to change plenty on mine.. easy enough job and they dont cost a lot.. Disco-Ron
Assuming it's on the 98-v8 you have in your signature...... check the rubber donut on the rear propshaft....... that'd be the prime suspect in my book.....
land-zuki
if it is the donut, which is quite likely, don,t waste your time with a britpart donut, life expectancy 3 minutes, buy a genuine parts one which is made by gkn, cost about £10 more than a pattern one,i speak through experience!!!!!!! PEASEY
While I agree with whats been said so far I would also check all rear bushes for wear, although the donut sounds like your best bet, very good advice as well about buying a gkn one,I learnt the hard way as well. teabag
Donut propshaft coupling is not fitted to V8's after vin VA710068. My disco is a 97 with a vin VA74 and therefore does not have one.

Mmm, in that case, check radius arm bushes, both ends, a frame joint, wheel nuts..... and bearings...... could even be a uj in the prop...!!! AndreO
I have exactly the same problem - The BFG's are oval. No amount of balancing helps. I found this out whilst on a Dyno, and the rear of the car was hopping around like a cat on a hot tin roof!
teabag
As Disco-Ron there's a lot that can give a vibration. My input is, could it be a engine misfire which I know can happen around that speed if you have iffy leads/plugs etc. and felt as a vibration. Richard Mills
If the rear shockers have not been changed, they may be a bit dodgy. They are quite cheap to replace, made mine a much steadier drive.
drkwack
Hi, as already mentioned most of the drive train is a possible cause but just as an extra check the wheel nuts, not hoping to preach but try torqueing them down , never no it may help, good luck
pw8757
OK - thanks for the input folks! Living up to the title of the thread, I checked this morning, saw all the advice up to Paesey's re the donut and was going near the dealership, so am the proud owner of a genuine LR replacement donut. Then I went under the vehicle.......... I wish I'd seen Teabag's thread and I might have looked before................ I have already got some Polybushes for the back end, so they can go on and I will see if that changes anything. All the shockers were changed for De Carbon dampers just over two years (about 35k miles) ago (anyone had any problems with them please?)
