nickcrawshaw Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Cold weather and diesel engines are a bad combination when it comes to starting. I have been looking into high torque, reduction gear staters which users seem to be very pleased with. However, nowhere can I find one to fit my 2.5 litre NA diesel (1986 Defender 110). Does any one know if they exist or can be adapted to fit. Has anyone any experience of them in a LR? Quote
townsend Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 im not 100% but i can remember fitting a 2.5 n/a to a disco 200tdi. it wasnt as powerful but fitted maybe a tdi starter will fit. if your having trouble starting from cols check you heaterplugs are working as this would make a huge difference. western Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 if it's having start problems, I'd be looking at the glowplugs & connections to the starter/battery first to be sure all are good & working correctly. Quote
DaveSIIA Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 2/300Tdi starter is a direct fit in place of the 2.5NAD starter. It should crank the NAD much easier than the original unit. Quote

Ex Member Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Personally, I would check your battery, cable connections and starter first.... Mines cranks and starts fine. Tested to -40. They like a lot of glow. Quote
nickcrawshaw Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 thanks for the help. I have a new battery but will check the connections and glow plugs before looking at a new starter. It does start, even when freezing cold, but turns over quite slowly. I let the glowplugs operate for aboout 20 seconds before cranking - is that enough? Quote
Ex Member Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Time for the glow depends on the temperature. If it does not fire in the first second, you need to give it more glow. Quote
