roybatty666 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 After systematically replacing my entire drive train I think I may have issues with my transfer box now I had a worn output shaft on my LT77 and the rear input gear was worn, I replaced (see my other thread for the fun that was) but although I have removed all that slack when I put my t-box back in and was testing the new gearbox I noticed that with difflock on I can turn one output flange 14 degrees before the other one starts to move. So it seems that part of my play was the transfer box, I am not to upset as I had poor syncros in the lt77 so wanted it replaced anyway. I would have thought the the lt230 having all the gears bathed in oil would stop anything wearing that badly (and this is not that old a box as it was reconned a little while before I got it). What in the box could cause that level of play? Cheers as ever Steve Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 14 degrees isn't that much play for a LR drivetrain component. Unless it's causing a problem I wouldn't worry too much. Quote

After fitting a new gearbox , diffs and perfect condition second hand shafts and cvs I want my transmission to be as tight as possible. Can the center diff wear to cause this issue? It doesn't seem to make any odds if you are in high or low Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Try the same measurement with the difflock in, that will tell you if the centre diff is slack or if it's elsewhere in the box - the output flanges can have play in the splines. Quote

If the diff is locked and there is play between the two flangers with gentle turning then it must be play in the ouput shafts / plant sun gear / flange splines etc as the diffshould be looked solid? I have just replaced the output shaft & bearing (front) on my lt230 - for differnent reasons, and the difference is very noticable - not sure if that helps - bit the original shaft had about 145k miles on it ... now all i need to do is find where all the oil is leaking from ! OilIT Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Looking at the exploded diagram of the box changing the shafts (mainly the front) look like a pig of a job nope - really easy - did it in about 1.5 hour = good link in the tech archive below - but I did have the replacement shaft and bearing all set up so it was just pull out and replace http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...mp;#entry254775 Quote
roybatty666 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Ah cool I didn't realise it all stayed inside the box and you could just pull the shaft Although to be honest with it all bolted back together with the new gearbox you don't feel the play in the transfer box so I will just change the seal cheers chap Quote
Shox Dr Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Sounds like play in the 3th diff (sun gears) I had quite a bit of play in mine before I rebuilt it, replaced the sims the the sun gears, hey presto none now Quote
