Ex Member
The 8274 came out in 1974 (that is what the 74 stands for in the name...) 8 - 8000 pounds. 2 - two directional, power in and power out 74 - 1974 Prior to that the same basic winch was in production as a power in only version with a manual brake for letting out. Originally called the Belliview winch and was started some time in early 1960s. http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/warn5687.php
cipx2
AFAIK they introduced it in 1974. That's were the last two digits come from. Edit: Red90 beat me..

nokiamutt
Ah cool. Can you still get spares for them? Would a motor of an new 8274 fit... I could remove it and try but asking may be easier!!Thanks pete Spares can be had from minesota in the US , motors are harder to come by and unfortunately the 8274 motor will not fit as the spur gears are diferent pitch and size . The motor that is fitted to the belleview has its gear cut into the shaft of the motors centre winding . This is a one way motor and the brake is a manual afair being eg=ngaged via a manually actuated lever fed via a cable from the cab . I have one of these in good nick , an awesome bit of kit just rather limited as its one way powered only ,, there is a thread on the pirate forum about a guy who managed to convert his to two way . If your looking to sell it i will be interested for sure .
moose
<edit> ok sorry just looked again at your pic and saw the brake so mark is correct its a Belleview so dont know about the motor hope my links help any way </edit> I happen to have one of those From My research its an warn 8200 here is some info :- http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=440842 http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=382401 http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/oldwarn.php http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=382364 http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/warn5687.php and a motor from a 8274 will fit just get the updated splined adapter but you will have to drill the motor drive end and use a split pin to stop drive gear falling off... hope this helps... Mark
I believe an 8274 motor will fit, but as has been said, you will also need to change the input gear from a spline drive to a keyed drive as new motors don't have the spline. My 8074 has a 4.6HP motor from a 8274-50 on it, with the later 8274 gear and it works fine. The winch was originally manufactured by Belleview, which was then bought by Warn. Warn rebadged it as an 8200 and then added a disk type brake to make the 8074. This was then used as the basis for the 8274 (although there is very little common between the two). I was under the impression that you could not get much in the way of spares, particularly the friction material for the band brake. I am happy to be wrong about that though! lots of good info there moose!
