Anyone any experience of buying LHD LR's on the Continent??

Since I'm getting posted to Germany, I'm looking into getting a left-hooker to use out there... has anyone had any experience of buying a left-hooker LR in Holland or Germany?

How do the prices compare? Anthing in particular to look out for? Any particular dealer recommendations?

I think I'll be looking at Disco II's and P38a's, another Defender would probably be the end of me! ;)

Cheers in advance,

Ross

The feeling I get from Ebay and the likes, is that LR's are more expensive in Holland. Disco's and P38 are mostly diesel, but there are some 4.6 HSE's around, some with LPG conversion. I personally would rather eat my 88 IIA than go to an official dealer. A usefull site discussing Dutch specialists and dealer is blubberweb.nl , where companies are rated. Please let me know if you need more info,

Maarten

There is a 4x4 specialist I know in Holland I don't know his name but there in a town called Weak (spelling could be wrong) just east of Amsterdam.

Very nice chap I own him a S11 which I must get round to delivering.

Currently, the grey licensed (van type with no rear seats and windows) versions are reasonably affordable, due to the roadtax being now even with personal cars. The road tax in holland for a diesel landy can get as high as £1000 per year, so be warned about this. Germany is similar in this respect. You Uk guys are spoiled with cheap road tax believe it or not. So keep this in mind as well when buying one over there. I have seen some left hookers in the uk for sale, I would go for that if you really wanted one. You wont have the big tax problem that way.

By the way, being dutch, my landy is a left hooker and it makes vey little difference to me driving in the uk. Also, driving my UK Peugeot on the continent is no bother at all. To be fair I wouldnt go to the trouble of changing cars just to have the steering wheel on the other side.

Hi Ross,

After reading your post I have to confess that I'm really green with envy    ... I work for a german company and I plan to move to Munich in a few moths. I use to go there about every five weeks and I'm delighted with the city (specially when compared with Madrid <_< )

Regarding the issue of the post, take a look at:

http://www.toytowngermany.com/

as it is plenty of information about cars (and other useful information) posted by ex-pats who moved to Germany. You will find information there about importing your car from UK (or another country in the continent) and details about german MOT.

regards,

Carlos

By the way,

Land Rover Defender is the #1 4x4 in Munich; you will see some X3s (as taxis !!!), X5s, a few Mercedes Geländewagen... but you will mostly see Defenders.

Hi McS Junior,

As you are posted to Germany I take it you are with the Army? As such when you register your vehicle you will BFG it with the MOD so will not be paying any road tax. You will also have a monthly allowance for subsidized fuel, which is a big bonus. Regarding left hand drive Disco's you need to to PM rejo. He lives in Holland has a LHD Disco and knows the best places to look for them, cheap! However, the headache you will then have is registering a vehicle to BFG from a Dutch owner in Holland. We all kept our RHD vehicles with no problem. You drive a lot more on motorways in DE so the need for LHD is not as important as you would think.

Cheers,

Paul
