Sluggish TDi

Recommended Posts

OK I have fitted a 300 Tdi to my 90. After a lot of messing about thinking it was overheating (caused by a Homer DOH! moment on my part (fitted both earth leads to the engine and gbox instead of one to chassis)) followed by a horrendous noise from the turbo (turned out I had lost 2 studs from the exhaust manifold), it's now running nicely. However, now that I can give it some welly I find it's quite sluggish and can only manage 60 - 65 Mph on a hill (not too steep just long). I would have expected it to have a bit more oomph. Whilst having the turbo problem I took it to a local turbo specialist who also said it felt a bit sluggish. He suggested that it may have a split in the diaphragm on the injector pump. Is this an easy fix and, does this sound like a plausible reason for poor performance ?

Anyone know what make the injector pump on a 300Tid is ?

Thnx

Ivan

Bosch, stand by drivers wing, stare at inj pump, diaphragm its the flat housing with 4 bolts in each corner, near where the throttle cable attaches. Un bolt and check the rubber.

Also check intercooler pipes aren't split, all the 5mm diameter black nylon boost control pipes are intact, lift pump is ok and throttle opens fully to end stop when foot is to floor on pedal - engine off for this test  - throttle cable adjuster sometimes vibrates back restricting movement...

Performance sounds similar to my 200tdi 110 with nearly 200k miles on it. How many miles on your 300tdi?

Check there's no air in the fuel lines and maybe a compression or leakdown test to rule out problems with the engine itself.

There turbo wasn't damaged was it, is it spooling up properly?

Maybe timing out slightly? blocked intercooler?

As stated check intercooler pipes, on mine the bottom one had slipped off the intercooler.

From the top it looked connected but on closer inspection it was butting up to the outlet, not attached to it.

If you get lots of black smoke on acceleration, this indicates unburnt fuel which was a symptom of my pipe not being properly connected.

once everything is checked hoses intercooler etc the best thing to do is open up the top of the pump and if the diaghram isnt split have a bit of a tweak of the pump it is easy enough to do and you can set it up as you like it and makes a world of difference you may aslo find that the previous owner may have knocked the pump back to get it through an emissions test

be carfull when adjusting the pump it can cause damage to the engine long term if not adjusted properly

my Tdi is the saem with a LT77 box but i i would tamper with the pump unless i know how so to speak ..

but as said check all pipework but mine will sit at 70 but struggles above that ??

I have full details on how to set the pump up and have done a few without problems but you do have to be careful with them i have 35" simexs and my defender with a 200 tdi will sit quite happily at 80 mph and will pull in 5th gear down to about 35mph which i was quite impressed with over how it was when standard

mine sits 75mph (110 with 161,000 mile) at the max. Never seen 80mph to my knowledge. Totally standard running gear.

I sit at 65mph on the motorway.

I may look at the pump thing later in the year if I get round to it.
