edwardatherton
I have got some modern rubber ones and also some metal/leather type. Is one type better than the other, and if I use the leather ones should I soak them in oil first?
minivin
I suppose the leather one's should be more resistant to grit and mud damage, but won't seal as well as the rubber one's. Liberal application of Petrolium Jelly to the leather should make them supple and help to make them impervious to water
Jon White
I've used both and havn't really noticed much difference. More important is what sort of condition the stub axles are in, as if they're grooved, then neither type will seal effectively! Jon

The leather ones will be kinder to the sealing collar, and yes they should be well soaked before use.
Les Henson
Liberal application of Petrolium Jelly to the leather should make them supple Oooooooooh! I know what that feels like. Bit O/T though isn't it? Les.
isuzurover
I have never, ever seen any of the leather ones, and I have owned/dismantles/worked on a lot of series trucks. When did they stop making the leather ones and switch to plastic? Personally I would use the plastic ones if you have both.
