tuko
I've been searching without luck for an alternative listing for oil filters. I have been given a part number by Jerry for short Fram Oil Filter to my engine (PH 5660) but the local distributor can't get that part in, so I'm hoping that somebody here can steer me in the right direction to an alternative listing so that I can match up a short oil filter to my 300Di. Thanks in advance, Todd.
cipx2
Who is Jerry? The PH5660 is not only shorter but also smaller in diameter - 80mm compared to 97mm on a standard filter. The thread is the same though. Is that what your after? Or you need same thread, same overall diameter but shorter than 140 mm in length (how short?)? cipx2
The W67/2 filter is no longer in production since April 2008 and Mann doesn't make a replacement for it I ain't gonna check the rest of the list PS. ... and the above filter doesn't fit anyway. Here's the Mann full size filter for 300 tdi (pictured) and the shorter alternatives in the table below:
tuko
Jerry is Jericho on this forum. He's using the Fram PH5660 filter on his motor to get the drive shaft clearance that we need. The standard oil filter on my landy is already banged up from the drive shaft, while enjoying some light offroading. Yes I'm looking for the same diameter, thread, just shorter. Many thanks Todd. Aragorn
You can use a filter of a smaller diameter, as long as the sealing ring is the same size.
jericho
Tuko, the part no. I gave you was for a filter which is shorter and smaller diameter - But it has the right thread and sealing ring.It was just what I had in stock at the time to do the job. There should be pleanty of filters that will fit the bill.If you have real problems I can send you some Fram filters. Jerry.
FridgeFreezer
If it's that close I'd stick a remote filter setup on it, you don't want a big hit taking the filter out.
ajh
You might want to do some research on filters before putting a Fram on your engine. Filters vary dramatically in quality, personally I would stick to K&N 3001 or Mobil 1 filters, as mentioned use a remote if you need the space. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html is the link to the most comprehensive study I have seen so far and required reading for anyone picking an oil filter. FF, I'm looking for a filter for the time being, but do you have any suggestions of what remote filter system would work on the 300Tdi? ie: Volvo turbo or something ?? Taking this route might be a winter project. Cheers, Todd.
FridgeFreezer
No idea which remote filter may fit, since you know the thread of the current one it shouldn't be hard to cross reference and find a Mocal or similar kit (Think Automotive have lots of kits). Here's the Mann full size filter for 300 tdi (pictured) and the shorter alternatives in the table below: Thanks for this reply. The fourth filter down on the diagram ( W917 ) which is 85mm long, is a perfect size and by searching more at the link provided earlier to Mann-Filters I found that it's a common filter for Volvo cars. So off to the Land Rover/Volvo dealership again today armed with my vernier caliper we double checked with the two filters side by side to confirm that they are a match. They certainly were and the Volvo filter is half the price. But while we were there talking and comparing the filters we then got on about remote locating the filter and one of the guys mentioned that the Volvo 940 turbos have the remote oil filter and uses the same filter as I just bought. He then went on that he has 3 extra in his garage and he's willing to loan one to me to trial fit on my engine, if it works I can buy it. I'll post some pictures once I trial fit/test the remote filter on the 300 motor. Thanks for the links and information, they've been a great help. Cheers, Todd. headhunter
The TGV 2.8 (300tdi derivative) has a remote filter which uses standard 300tdi filters. Try M&D Engineering who might be able to supply one as they are UK agents. http://mdengineering.co.uk/index.php John
tuko
I changed the oil in the Hybrid today and installed the shorter Volvo filter. Here is a picture of the filter next to the original size filter that would have be on the 300Di motor. The Volvo filter is approx. 30mm shorter but all the other dimensions are the same, including the sealing rubber ring. Hopefully you can see the Volvo part number on the filter. Todd.
