landkeeper
the shafts on v8 lt77s and v8 r380s are different lenths as are the bellhousings the defender r380 bellhousing is exactly the same as a r380 discovery one

(not the same length as a 200tdi box) If i fit an r380 with the correct bellhousing for the gearbox, will this mean my engine will need moved further back ? i would like to retain my propshafts as they are new. Mike Brownlie
so am i just looking for a v8 discovery bell housing from 1995> ?
Mike Brownlie
okay i think im catching on to this its pretty similar to the lt77s i need a discovery r380 input shaft and bellhousing from a td5, and a defender r380 gearbox. this would then give me the difflock and gear change in the correct place ? FridgeFreezer
i need a discovery r380 input shaft and bellhousing from a td5, and a defender r380 gearbox. Close, you need a V8 R380 input shaft & bellhousing and Defender box (or at least the arse end of one) to put the shifters in the right place. If you read my post a bit further down the link Western posted it shows a picture of exactly what you need - what with me having a V8, R380 and Defender shifter setup in my truck and all
landkeeper
best thing to do is ring ashcrofts afaik from my stuff here the bellhousing is common between a defender r380 and a discovery r380 they will both bolt directly to the back of a v8 block that was fitted with an lt77 the r380 bellhousing is longer than the one for the lt77 that would suggest to me that the shaft is longer too and im told by a friend that tried to do it that it was NOT possible to use the defender gear linkage mechanism on a discovery box what exactly are you trying to fit to what as im completely at sea now where does the td5 stuff come in to the mix if you just want to fit a r380 to your v8 engine assuming its a gearbox designed to sit behind the 8 pot then all you need is any bellhousing from a v8 r380 ie a ftc3922
Mike Brownlie
thanks guys my head was full of all sorts. i have availible a td5 r380 thats where that came from. disco v8 stuff would make sense as its a v8
FridgeFreezer
landkeeper is not quite right, the R380 bellhousing is ~1" shorter than the LT77 because the R380 itself is ~1" longer than the LT77, the R380 being designed to drop in place of an LT77. landkeeper
i stand corrected i knew one was longer than the other cos i was measuring both trying to decide which to stick in an 80". disco 380 disco77 or defender 380 ????? all going to be fun cos it used to have a series box in there very short prop at the back methinks i'll get me tape out again and post up for posterity shaft and bellhousing lenths
Aragorn
I think your basically going to need to strip the box down to achieve what you want. I'd pickup a V8 Disco R380, and then use its input shaft and bellhousing on your TD5 Defender R380. That way you'll have the better "L" suffix box from the TD5, and it will fit your motor. If you use the original LT77 mounts, then you shouldnt need to change the propshafts, although i've no idea if they'll fit, the boxes are pretty similar so i think it should be fine. Aragorn
My last gearbox dissasembly involved Mr Angry Grinder, a big steel bar and a big hammer... Theres quite a few specialist tools required, and lots of measuring and tolerances to get right, so you really want someone that knows what they're doing! Plus, i've just moved to cleveleys in lancashire, so quite a distance away now! Whereabouts in livi are you from? My parents are in dedridge, as is my brother.
