trt1617 Posted October 12, 2009 Share Posted October 12, 2009 hello again all does anyone know if its possible to fit a safari style raised air intake if you have an ecternal cage fitted? i have converted my old 90 to a 300 tdi and dont have the hole in the rite side of the truck. at present i have a piece of drain pipe out of the top of the drivers wing top vent alont the top and up the cage and it works well tested it many times it just looks naff. gonna paint the truck soon and would like a decent looking air intake and like the look of safari ones. are they any good? do the copys work as good? just dont fancy squashing a real one if they would break? have squashed the one on there anainst a tree and it just poped back to shape any ideas chaps? im sure iv seen trucks with both but cant see how its been done Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Some scuffs where West Sussex left it's mark, but no alterations to shape etc. For what it's worth, when I eventually progress to the wonderful highlands of cage ownership, I will likely do away with the Safari and make up a custom intake all the way to the airbox. The issue with Safaris is that they rely on the Land Rover gubbins inside the wing to seal...and believe me it just doesn't ok that sounds like kinda a good review and a bad one in the same rite up seems it can take the knocks really well then but not keep thr water out to well from what you have said!!! the two i have fitted for friends have had a tube on the inside of the wing that a piece of rubber tube (that comes in the kit)fits on between the air box and snorkle??? one on a jeep xj and one on a vitara. but you say the landy one uses all the normal inner wing stuff? bit of a problem as i dont have any of the standard stuff Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Because of the heater box, there is this funny shaped plastic bit that moves the air down to the gap between heater motor and inner wing. Under the washer bottle. Due to this, the Safari for the 200Tdi just ends at the outer wing and everything inside is the hard to seal Land Rover stuff. On the 300Tdi designs there is no such space issue, so the Safari for those has a spigot (is that the right word? The 'tube' you referred to ) which takes the pipe leading directly to the airbox. Less places to leak, so better solution in my opinion. ok that might be ok then as my air box is 300 tdi side just have no hole in the wing that side just need to work out if theres enough rom for me to cut a hole in the wing to fit it without hitting the wheel arch spat thing do you have measurements of your wing and stuff so i could try and work out if it will go????? Especially if your airbox is the other side) Hope that helps would your snorkle not be the same size as a 300 tdi one? its just my cage bar that goes up the screen is probably 2 inches away from the screen and would mean the hole in the wing would need to go 2 inches forward and i think that would put the base of the snorkle into the wheel arch spat Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Looking from the drivers side, the snorkel needed the bottom right corner taking out (done by some plastic specialist so it looked factory), this was on a 300tdi. so as to not foul the wheel arch. zardos Posted October 13, 2009 Share Posted October 13, 2009 I agree, with a cage a Southdown snorkel is the way to go Dito Having done the safari with cage by moving it forward and cutting a new hole (I used the standard plastic grill in the wing not a metal plate). This just cleared the wheel arch. The problem I found is that the Safari sticks out to much and was always getting caught on trees. I've fitted the Southdown one to come straight out of the top of the wing (not using the plastic bottom bit), so it's tucked out of the way of trees.
