mike4444244
Hi 1993 Defender 200TDi Went to change my cambelt today (thank god) and when we took the timing cover off about 2" depth of diesel came out on removal of the FIP its obviously leaking from the seal behind where the pulley sits (clear? ) So... Is this pump fubared? Can I replace this seal myself? How much roughly is a pump recon going to cost me? Is there anyone on here who can do it for me? What else do I need to do, apart from burn the whole effing thing as it has now had exactly double its value spent on it Mike.... off for a pint of Gin! smo
I had a leak on my old 200Tdi, i sent the pump off for a rebuild from "diesel bob" (google him) - first class service and he will use HD seals that withstand veg-oil if you request too. Its not cheap though.
ciderman
Mike , if you are confident enough to carry out the job its simple , It can be done in situ without removing the FIP , You will have to lock the pump shaft by removing the locking plate on the side of the pump and screwing the bolt back in to secure the shaft, remove the pulley , Get a sharp narrow centre punch or a panel pin and peirce the seal , Screw a self tapping screw into the pierced hole and extractthe seal with pliers , Make sure there is no surface rust on the shaft ,then simply fit the new seal . The rest is a reverse of what you have done . The seal is about £
western
new seal will probably have to come from a Bosch diesel injection agent, pretty sure LR won't stock them as replaceable parts.

mike4444244
Anyone got a part number for the seal, and/or the pump? I'm 30 miles from my unit at the mo... Mike
Les Henson
You can get the seal from any diesel injection workshop, but you'll need the pump type and number. Method of replacing it is very similar to the TD or N/A engine, with a few differences. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=5260 Les. mike4444244
Thanks Les, I think I'll have a crack at the seal and then get the pump reconned properly when I can afford it! Mike
martinhollings
rember there is no key way on the shaft so when you remove the pully you need to no where to put it back on (guess how i found that out) but the key way no the pully had left a mark on the shaft so got away with it
Les Henson
Left mark is a good indicator - this is what I used the first time I did one. You can mark the pump shaft and flange with an engineers scribe before removing it, so reassembly is very easy. Les.
mike4444244
Just to put this to bed, I did the above and changed the seal For future reference the seal is this one Its about the size of a £2 coin, which is what it cost me! Les Henson
A manky old seal in a bag with a free £2 coin looks like a good deal to me Les.
